@edelweiss: it is a whole juggling act, but it sounds like you're on the right track! Yes, she eats 4x a day and mostly once at night. She will occasionally need 2 night feedings. Both kids are asleep now so I have time. :-)

@Andrea: i was kind of a wreck playing out a million different scenarios in my head as the day went on because i wanted to be a little flexible but not too much. i "made" him take one longer nap by putting him in the carrier (he usually wakes up after 45-60 minutes and i extended it to 2 hours--i know naps in motion aren't the same, but oh well), and then when he woke up within 3 hours of the target bedtime, i nursed him for a few minutes but not a full feeding. his last nap ended around 5pm. he's *still* fighting sleep, but we'll keep it up the next few nights and see how it goes. hopefully he'll adjust. oh please let him adjust. i think i still have to figure out his nap schedule (i.e. whether to go with the short naps or train him to go longer--since 2 weeks old, he hasn't been a great sleeper).

so does your youngest LO eat 4 times a day? does your LO have any night feedings? sorry to keep bothering you, obviously no rush, you have your hands full!

@edelweiss: awesome! What time did he wake up from his last nap? Did you limit any naps during the day?

@Andrea: thanks andrea! he woke up himself around 6.30am and i acted like it was the beginning of the day (i.e. it's not a night feed) and we've been working on a 12-ish hour schedule. we put him down about 20 minutes ago and he sure is fighting it, but i hope he gets used to it over the next few days!

@edelweiss: it was pretty easy to get into. Just start waking your LO up at 6:30 am every day and take it from there. You just have to be consistent and hopefully your LO will follow suit.

To be honest, it's been really hard to get my LO on a schedule, but we do have a routine of EASY. Her first nap depends on when she wakes up, and the rest of the naps then follow. She stays up 1.5 hrs between naps and goes to bed around 6:30-7:30, depending when she woke up from last nap. So although we don't have set nap and feeding times, the day has a general flow to it which is important

@Andrea: thanks! i was wondering, in order to get on that schedule, did you do it gradually or just whole hog? LO is going to bed around 8-9pm (i tried putting him to bed at 7 last night and i'm not sure what happened but he freaked out), and i'm not sure how i'm going to enforce a 6:30am wake up time.

@edelweiss: don't feel too bad. As long as they get enough sleep, overall, the universe will not fall apart! Here is my sleep schedule since my youngest is the same age as your LO and goes to sleep by 6:30!

7: wake up
9-10: nap
12-2: nap
4-5: nap
6/6:30: bedtime

@Andrea: thanks for your response. you're right, it is so hard to wake him up from sleep. but your experience gives me some courage, in that you woke your kids up from nap/sleep and the universe didn't fall apart!

@Rubies: LO is 9 weeks and I go back at 12 weeks, so I think I need to start establishing something now!

I'm like @Andrea in that LO was on a rigid schedule for months prior to my going back to work. The only difference was that when I went back to work, we had to wake LO up in the morning (instead of letting her wake up on her own).

i'm a big schedule person so i put both kids on schedules from an early age. and they are both daycare kids. it is quite painful to wake them up in the morning and from naps but it's the way to go for me to make sure that they are up at the right time in the morning for daycare and then go to bed in time to get enough sleep for the next day.

if you went back to work after LO was born, did you try to establish a schedule before your return date? our loosey-goosey, go-with-the-flow, i-have-no-clue-what's-going-on approach is not going to fly with our long commutes and getting LO to daycare.

if you did try to set a schedule before going back to work, what was your strategy? namely, did you wake up LO from afternoon naps to try and set a bedtime? it kills me to wake him up from a nap because it's so hard to get him to fall asleep in the first place, but eventually he's going to need to go to bed by 6:30pm!

how long did it take for things to settle into a rhythm once as you went back to work?
