I think we just kind of fell into 3 meals because it's the only one I'm around to feed him for. I obviously didn't want to send new foods to daycare, so I had to try them out with him at night. And now he's used to it and gets hungry. Plus it's fun because he's in that age where he'll eat pretty much everything.

I guess eating every 2 hours is normal. I think I will try dropping from 5 to 4 bottles though.

@ladybee: omg yes!!! We both woh full time and DH works nights 2-3x a week. There is not enough time to cook between when we get home and bath time. LO was a crap sleeper so I do not mess with bed time. I would freeze in ~ 1oz portions. Frozen peas and Edemame are still lifesavers for me. And I still make big breakfasts on the weekends and freeze leftovers for the week.

@Smurfette: our ped is big on the concept of meals as well. Mud Neocate is costing us $600 a month so he wants to help us transition off as soon as we hit a year.

@locavore_mama: what a great idea with frozen meals! I'm off now and we are grilling so it's not a huge deal but when I go back to work Ill have to try that.

@locavore_mama: Yeah our pedi doesn't recommend solids till 6 months. We started at 5.5 cause R seemed ready. She just wanted R to get use to the concept of meals and I think it helped with the transition to no bottles so much easier. Back then she would eat anything we gave her. Not so much now!

@locavore_mama: I've been trying to figure that out. There's definitely a correlation between eating and sleep for him. But I'm not sure if the key to it is really just the last bottle, or how much he eats all day long. Over the weekend he ate less overall and got up earlier, but it's hard to tell if he woke up on his own or just heard DH moving around.

@ShootingStar: if we are really busy and he only gets two meals a day he will still sleep. If he only gets one all bets are off. I've stopped messing with food, I like my sleep.

@ladybee: :) LO is average sized. But damn if she doesn't have her daddy and my appetite now. :)

@Smurfette: interesting. Our ped and DH and I are both firmly no solids before 6m and food before one is just for fun. So I never sweated about meals till around 11m ish.

@ShootingStar: TBH at that age if we were out of time then I just skipped the meals and nursed. She never missed it though. Do you think a skipped meal actually affects his sleep? If it does then unfortunately it's all part of woh dinner time struggle! :(

At that age I had pre-made meals ready to go in the freezer! I would defrost in the fridge while we're at work. Then it's just a matter of reheating when I get home. Bedtime was so much earlier then so there didn't leave a lot of time for cooking.

@ladybee: Yeah, he started sleeping 11ish hours a night when he started eating this much. So now I'm a little hesitant to reduce it. On the weekends we go with a schedule more like what you posted - bottles every 4 hours/ 4 a day. But at daycare he if they offer sooner than 4 hours he eats them, so I'm not sure if we should drop the extra one or not. I'm scared it'll mess with his sleep, lol.

@locavore_mama: I wasn't really sure how to start with him and at daycare they asked if I wanted to do breakfast and lunch, which a lot of the other kids did, so I said ok. He generally eats .5-1 pouch/jar/tub at breakfast and lunch and then 1-2 at dinner.

I'm not so much worried, as I'm wondering if there's a better way to do it than what we're doing now. On the weekends I feel like we're constantly trying to squeeze meals in. And at night it's so stressful because if we're late getting home it messes everything up - it's like 5 minutes after getting in the house I have to get him in the high chair and start feeding him so that he can digest and then want to drink his final bottle. If he had a crappy nap day then he starts falling asleep early/getting really cranky so I have to feed him early and then he doesn't want to finish. Which then means he doesn't sleep as well/as long.

Our pediatrician and pediatric GI want Matt to follow thsr guidelines:
No less than 24oz of formula a day, no more than 32oz and 3 meals a day. When he was on all purees it was 4 oz meals. Now he gets a pancake (about the size of half an iphone) and some fruit for breakfast, a pouch for lunch (4oz) and pasta and applesauce or something similar for dinner.

At 8 months we started this schedule. Primarily because I'm off work for the summer and between eating and sleeping there wasn't time to do anything else, ever.

Basically he gets 4 bottles of between 7-8oz a day which works out to every four hours.

7 - bottle
9 - breakfast
11 - bottle
1 - lunch (often a pouch or apple sauce on the go)
3 - bottle
5 - dinner
7 - bedtime bottle

When we started this schedule he started sleeping 12 hours without a wake up. Now that it's summer and more is going on the wake up and bedtime schedule change but it always follows the same pattern

I will add that at 11.5 months she dropped her afternoon bottles. Then we just offered more food with meals. She gets milk right after her meal (otherwise she won't eat, will get full on the milk). She just gets a morning and afternoon snack now (post bottles).

Wow! I didn't amp LO up to 3 meals till much closer to one. :) Has your LO needed it? How big are his "meals"?

I always gave bottle first. At 8m his primary nutrition should be from formula/BM. I think I would offer solids about an hour later? And probably only about 1-2oz.

Are you concerned he's eating too much? I'm not saying he is because obviously every child's nutritional needs are different. Just wondering what exactly you're worried about. :)

1030 bottle

Sounds totally normal to me!!! We did the same thing with Xander! We didn't start combining milk with meals until after he was one and we went away from bottles. Then we started offering milk with meals. But he still (16m) eats all day long, it feels like!

D has been doing great with solids lately and we're currently at 3 meals a day. He also takes 4-5 bottles, depending on when he wakes up. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but it feels like he's eating. All. Day. Long. It's fine when during the week because daycare has to deal with it, but at home it's like we're constantly rushing to get his next meal/bottle in.

Currently he gets bottles at approximately 7, 10:30, 1:30, 4, and 7. Solids at 9:30, 12:30, and 5:30. I have been spacing out the timing of eating because I thought he would need time between bottles and solids to get hungry again.

What I'm wondering is - is there a better way to do this? Should I be combining the 3 daytime bottles with his 3 solids meals? I've been afraid to do that because I figure if he finishes the bottle he'll be full and not eat anything else. Or is this normal? If so, how do I have him go from eating around the clock (at least during waking hours) to eventually just 3 meals with 1 or 2 snacks?
