We don't have young cousins--the cousins in DH's family are his age (30) and have kids (and live 30 minutes away)!

Most of our friends have grandma care. The work friends I have that use daycare have family nearby. I'll ask if they would recommend their teachers, though! We don't live in the same area, though, which I worry would be an issue (hey, drive 30 minutes to my house and babysit, ya know?...) =\.

My friends and coworkers all have adult children (nearly all of my coworkers are in their 50's)

I just feel like we are so limited on options

@blackbird: I know you said no family but what about young cousins? Do you have any friends that send their kids to daycare and would reco their teachers? Any friends or co-workers have babysitters they regularly use?

Eh, we don't have trusted neighbors. My neighbors are all quite old and out of touch.

What is it, like $20/year to use care.com?

We went through care.com and then I found a wonderful babysitter at our gym. She is one of the childcare providers and we absolutely adore her! She was better than anyone we found through care.com.

Like Bao, I was going to recommend care.com or sittercity.com. Both seem reputable.

We haven't had to deal with this, but I know some people ask trusted neighbors for referrals?

Care.com and sittercity.com are great sites. I used them to find all my nanny/babysitting positions in the past. It's very legit.

While my MIL lives half an hour away, we can't always expect her or count on her to babysit. Sometimes, we know it'll just be a bad time for her or it'll be easier to have someone come over last minute. For instance, DH and I play in a summer softball league. We're both considering hiring a sitter for a couple hours on Tuesday evenings so we can have date night essentially. But MIL won't be off work yet, so we would need to hire someone. It needs to happen eventually and I'd rather find someone we like sooner than later.

How'd you go about finding a reliable babysitter who isn't family? We don't go to church and none of our friends live super close (the friends we do have somewhat close have family right down the street), so it's tough to get a personal recommendation. There are no teens on our block, either. What about care.com or something like that? I know daycare teachers sometimes babysit, but we have an in-home lady. And at 4:00pm, she's still watching other kids :)
