For some babies, it takes time for them to develop longer naps. Eli didn't have consistent long naps until much later... 6 months I think?

We definitely struggled with this when LO was 2.5-4 months (and still struggle with it from time to time now at almost 5 months!). We definitely had 5 nap days at that age and they drove me craaaazy!!! Once LO turned 4 months I upped all of his wake times to 2 hours, stuck with 3 naps per day regardless of crap naps, and we have seen a lot of improvement!

Like pp have said, babies wake in between sleep cycles and being able to sleep thru into the next cycle is developmental. If you have surefire ways to get her to go back to sleep then use them!

From everything I have read, when they are this young, they just can't handle enough wake time to make them tired enough to sleep longer. It is supposed to get better when they drop to 2 naps at 6-8 months.

My LO has always been a great night sleeper, but would fight naps like crazy until about 3pm when she crashed and only sleep in our arms. Then, I just started putting her on her belly for naps. I know, I know... start throwing stones :) She has great head control so I wasn't too worried, and even with the monitor I still check on her several times. She's been taking 2 hour naps since.

So, he just woke up at the 45 minute mark, made some noise, then went back to sleep. Let's hope he sleeps another 45!

@brownie: It's definitely not pain. She is almost always a happy camper... just hates to nap. I'm pretty sure that 30 minutes is her sleep cycle b/c I watch her go from totally passed out in a deep sleep to moving around and flapping her arms and legs right at the 30 minute mark. Swaddling doesn't help at all for her naps, and motion only helps somewhat. I've just decided to accept that her naps are going to be short... at least for now.

@skibobrown: I have heard that 30 minutes is pain or under/over tired. For my little guy it was pain. 45 minutes is when the sleep cycle is over and they can't get back to sleep.

We did spend the majority of the first few months letting him sleep swaddled in his swing.

I'm in the same boat, and we've tried everything. Nothing works for us yet unfortunately. (Our daughter is 3.5 months). She actually wakes after 30 minutes. We consider ourselves lucky if she makes it to 45 minutes. You can literally time a half-hour clock by her naptime wakings. Like your baby, our daughter also sleeps beautifully at night...

The 45 minute intruder is so difficult. We still struggle at 15 months old with it. chronicles of a babywise mom blog has lots of posts about the 45 minute intruder and how to try to work through it. Baby Whisperer suggests the wake to sleep method of gently rousing them right before the transition.

At 2 1/2 months, I would expect them to still be taking 3 or 4 naps a day with less than an hour of wake time. They should be 1 1/2 hour to 2 hour naps.

My 10 week old is a great night sleeper (one 5-7 hour stretch and two 3-4 hour stretches) but his naps are always only 45 minutes long, so he ends up taking 5 naps a day, with just over an hour of awake time between naps.

Anyone have any tips on getting him to nap longer? I'd love to get him down to 2-3 longer naps a day. Right now, as soon as he gets fussy I swaddle him and after a few minutes of rocking him he falls right to sleep and I put him down in his pack 'n' play.
