My toddler is now almost 2.5 and her bedtime is usually 8:30 (moved back further from my last post) and she now sleeps till 6:30, sometimes 7. Funny to see that still so many months later, her sleep overnight is always 9.5-10 hours. I don't miss the 7 pm-5am schedule at all!

@tinyperson: Good to know. We bought one today and DS is super excited to have a clock for his room. I hope it works but I know it won't be 100% of the time.

@californiadreams: DH always jokes that when DS is a teenager that he is going to wake him up early and there will be no sleeping in since he won't sleep good now. I said do what you like but leave me out of it, I'll be sleeping!

@tinyperson: sorry to hear :(

this week was rough travelling with L as he and i were going to bed later than usual and he was waking before 6am, which is earlier than usual. I was joking to DH last night that i hope he sleeps in to 10am today because he needs to catch up on lost sleep. then i realized that one day he will. I just have to be patient and wait a few more years, lol. then will come a time when i have to drag him out of bed or he will stay there past noon.

@ALV91711: Kinda works, kinda not. Sometimes the first sounds she makes are "mom, the sun's up, the sun's up, the sun's up..." which makes me wonder if she was awake and waiting for it. Other times she wakes up before it turns on and calls for us. So it's hit and miss. :)

For us a 7pm bedtime also turned out to be too early and that pretty much overnight. So now my 2.5 year old goes to sleep at 8:30pm which means a 8pm bedtime and he sleeps to 6:15-7am most mornings. Before he got up at 5am often. He takes 1.5h naps at daycare.

Our solution is something a little different, but mine were already on a mattress on the floor at that age. So I would let them come to our bed but I absolutely would not talk to them before a certain time. Cuddle, pat the back, possibly a shhhhh at most but no words would come out of my mouth- not even telling them to go back to sleep. They got the message that nothing was going on at all, whatsoever and learned to fall back asleep.

My son settled in to 10 hours of nighttime sleep around that age but still takes a long nap. We slowly moved his bedtime to 8 so he typically sleeps 8-6 now, but we went through a really rough phase. The toddler alarm clock definitely helps. If he wakes before 6 he knows now that he has to wait in his room for the light to change. He doesn't ever go back to sleep if he wakes in the 5am hour but he at least stays in his room chatting to himself instead of screaming to get up.

My 21 months old used to go to bed at 7 and wake at 4:45-5 every day. Ever since the time change, we have kept her bedtime to 8pm and now most days she sleeps till 5:50-6:00 am. She has always slept a total of 9.5-10 hours overnight, never ever more.

She typically naps 12:30-2:00 or 2:30 at daycare.

So I would also try a later bedtime, but I would move it incrementally and give it a couple of weeks to take effect.

I can't believe your LO goes to bed so early. My LO daughter will be 2.5 in June and she goes to be between 8:30-9. We are working on trying to get it moved up to 8pm, as we definitely could stand to have more time to ourselves in the evening. That being said, she never gets up for the day on her own before 7-7:30. On the weekends, she usually gets up 7:30-8...sometimes she will sleep until 8:30, even 9.

She used to sometimes wake up at 6. I would get her milk if she asked, but tell her she had to go back to sleep. I'd leave her in the crib and usually she would be able to fall back sleep.

i would try the toddler alarm clock. also, i know this isn't that helpful, but it may be a phase that she grows out of on her own. when my son was going through something similar, i would try and be consistent in going in there, recovering him with a blanket, and staying it's still night night time. sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, but eventually he stopped. it is so tough!

@tinyperson: I set it for the earliest that I want to see them. So, I SAHM and our schedule isn't too strict and I have it turn green at 7 am. That means almost every day at 7 am my 3 year old son RUNS into my room screaming "MY ALARAM CLOCK IS GREEEEEEEN!"

I know you can also have it beep, if you want. But, since you are dealing with an early riser, I would set it for the earliest you want to see your LO.

http://www.amazon.com/Wake-Childrens-Alarm-Clock-Nightlight/dp/B002RNKOM2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1429795064&sr=8-2&keywords=Toddler+Alarm+Clock
This is the one we have. (actually we have two) I really like it except that it only uses batteries.

@MamaBehr: I'll go check out the kids store near work at lunch to see if they have one - I'd been toying with the idea for a while. Do you just set it for the latest time you want them to get up (i.e., I don't mind if she gets up anytime after 6am, but she needs to get up by 6:30 - do I set the timer for 6:30?)

TODDLER ALARM CLOCK!

It is amazing how well this works. It turns green when it is time for them to get out of bed, super visual and easy to understand. I think I have started my two bigs on a toddler alarm clock around that age.

@Corduroy: LO has always been an early riser, but 4:30 is getting ridiculous. She's slept through the night unless sick or teething or something since 9 months. The MOTN wakeups are coinciding with the 4:30-5 am wakeups, so maybe something's going on...

@tinyperson: Wait for us PST parents to get up. I have no solutions but my toddler has always woken up early and poops before 6am; 5:15 this morning. You have my sympathy.

I've tried shifting bedtime earlier & later but both resulted in earlier wakeups. She even adjusted herself when the time change in one day. Following for other suggestions.

I agree about a later bedtime. My 2.5 year old typically naps for 1-2 hours and bedtime is between 8-9 and she wakes up anywhere from 6:30-7:30. I think a later bedtime might break the early to rise cycle, but it may take a few days to see improvement.

For the past two months or so, my 2.5 year old has been not only waking up a couple of times a night crying for me, but has also been waking up at 4:30 or 5 for a couple of weeks at a time. Then she'll have a "normal" week where she sleeps through the night and wakes up 6-6:30.

She usually just need a hug for the MOTN wakeups, but for the early morning wakeups, nothing's worked. I've tried bringing her into our bed (this results in daddy having to read a book), sitting in her room (which made her stop wailing yesterday, but she just stood in her crib stroking her cheek and yawning), rocking her (she just wanted to go "that way" and pointing out her door), and telling her it's still night time. It's dark in her room (i.e. curtains block out the sun, but there is no sun at 4:30), she has a night light, and I haven't heard any weird noises. At one point, I think DH asked her if she saw something (a shadow) on the wall, and of course she's latched onto that as her answer when we ask her what's going on.

Her naps at daycare haven't changed (1-1.5hrs, getting up no later than 2:30), and she goes to bed between 7 and 7:30, and goes right to sleep. She still needs her nap - on bad nap days, she's a bear (takes after me I think).

Anyone else going through this? Losing sleep brings out the worst in me and I'm struggling. DH's goal in the morning is more about stopping the crying than about addressing the issue.
