@Mrs. Polish: they need to be consistent for at least 2 weeks. we struggled with this so much with our lo. if something wasn't working, after a couple of days we'd try something else but it takes longer than 2 days for the baby to adjust.

we ended up doing cio. the first 2 nights lo cried for almost an hour but the 3rd night was much shorter and it only got better from there. if that's the method they're going to do they really need to be committed and not give in, and trust me i KNOW that's a lot harder said than done. good luck to them!

so their LO eventually falls asleep after an hour of fussing/crying? does their LO go into the crib at 10pm, or that's usually the time that she falls asleep?

we did extinction CIO. while i had heard wonder stories about people doing CIO for 3 nights and being done, ours was a much slower process that took months. the first couple of weeks he fussed/cried for about an hour before falling asleep. i thought CIO was a failure and about to give up, except that we had no other good way of getting him to sleep--he wouldn't nurse to sleep or fall asleep being rocked, in the carrier, on us, etc. so i kept up with it and eventually we entered a period where he cried/fussed for 15-20 minutes before falling asleep. this last at least a month, and sometimes there were relapses. now he doesn't cry and is able to fall asleep on his own.

if they aren't comfortable with extinction CIO, have they tried the ferber method with checks at increasingly longer intervals?

@Smurfette: I put her in the crib and went back every 3-5 min when she was really really crying to give her paci back. I think over tiredness is making things harder.

I wonder if it is time for her to drop a nap during the day? I had a hard time coming to grips that my son was on the lower end of total hours of sleep needed in 24 hours. Once I adjusted him, he was going to bed easier and longer.

How did you get her nap trained? Is she doing something different at home? They can't go in there and rescue her. She has learned cry for an hour and I get to go sleep with Mom and Dad.
Do they start bedtime too late? Could she be over tired and therefore that much harder for her to go to bed?

Agree with @Adira - if they do CIO they need to commit and be consistent and not give in, otherwise they are teaching the kid the harder he cries, the more likely it is he'll end up in bed with them.

@Adira: I also agree with this. We had to stop all the sleep associations we were doing before bed (nursing to sleep, rocking, bringing him into bed with us) before he would sleep through the night.

I guess I would look at the overall schedule for the day and add up the amount of sleep she's getting. It may be that she is napping too long or too late in the day and needs to stay up later at night because she isn't tired yet.

I'm not here yet (and Xander's a good sleeper anyway), but I think the fact that they keep giving in is probably teaching the kid to keep crying until they come and get him. They need to pick a sleep training method and then stick with it. If they give in, they're only teaching him to keep crying until they come "rescue" him.

Though what do I know? I'm a FTM with a good sleeper, so hopefully some other Bees have good advice for you.

Ladies, I'm asking this for a friend who is having a very hard time every night getting her daughter to bed. I watch the sweetie during the day and after three weeks she's mostly successfully nap trained (she doesn't always go down without crying, but it's 1000x better than it was).

The problem is, mom picks her up from me, takes her home, feeds solids, bath, PJs, book, nurse and bed. The problem is she doesn't want to go to bed and is up some nights until ten. They've tried some CIO, but she will cry off and on for an hour or until she gets to go to mom and dad's bed.

We are both FTM and I want to help, but Isaiah does not take solids yet and does not nurse.

Can you offer any advice I could pass on? Thanks so much.
