I put it on her plate and don't make a fuss about it. It doesn't always work but I don't think its something to stress about unless its all out refusal to eat anything healthy at all times. Food can easily turn into a power struggle and a way for kids to exert control. I'm not willing to risk that to get her to try something new.

She'll usually eat something off her plate and then ask for more - so like others, we'll tell her she has to have a bit of X before she can have more Y. That usually works, and 50% of the time she likes it and eats more than we asked her to. Dips work too!

Nothing and I mean nothing works for us. I told her broccoli was little trees and she put it on her lips, and then threw it down. Every veggie has been coated in cheese, ranch, ketchup, told her to dip them in it, etc. We have tried bribing her, you eat once piece you get a cookie, one bite and you get an M&M. I eat veggies every night with her and it still doesn't get her to try it.

Our pedi said that closer to 3, in her experience, is when you can start bargaining with them on dinner.

Not a lot works except for repeatedly offering. Sometimes she wants to try something she hasn't been offered but we are eating. Occasionally we have had success by telling her "this is big girl food, do you want to try it?" :)

@wonderstruck: Yep, bribery!

Also, sometimes I'll sit down with him and I'll have a bite of whatever it is. Once he sees me eat it, he's more likely to try it himself.

DH and I grab some of whatever it is and we ask LO to "cheers" with us, like you would when toasting a beverage (picture three people 'clinking' broccoli in the air). So far that has gotten LO to pick the item in question up and put it in her mouth. Sometimes she'll swallow and sometimes she spits it out but at least she's tasting it.

We do just what @wonderstruck: 's mom did and some of what @hilsy85: said. We put whatever we are eating on his plate, but the first few times its offered we don't push him eating it (if he says no the first couple times we serve green beans, we let it pass). After 2 or 3 opportunities to try it on his own, then we serve small portions of whatever he likes and only offer 2nds if he tries the new food. Sometimes he refuses and we just end dinner there; most of the time he'll eat one small bite, say "Yum!" and immediately ask for whatever food he was trying to get seconds of. Eventually, we had to institute a "thirds" rule where his second portion is also small and so he must eat all the food on his plate before he gets a third helping. We also do sprinkled cheese on top of things he only kind of likes.

I think he's just naturally pretty adventurous but ketchup or another "dippy sauce" usually helps out a lot. He'll try anything he can dip!

Same as @wonderstruck: I will ask her in the beginning to try one bite for me. If that didn't work I will say I will give her more of what she did like if she tried one bite. Over time if she didn't like it and spit it out I didn't make a big deal. So now she's gotten pretty good about trying everything at least once. Which I think is really important to not be a picky eater!
I'm don't know if we got lucky or did something right but she's a really good water considering all the weird stuff we eat. Or maybe that's why because she was exposed to all my ethnic foods at a young age.

I just got lucky with this, but my mom had a pretty good trick. If she was serving something new and anticipated me not wanting to try it, let's say a new veggie, she would also serve mashed potatoes and would give me just a little bit. When I finished them and asked for me, she would tell me I could have more once I tried a bite of the new veggie. Usually that was enough to get me to choke down at least one bite.

Sometimes if we pretend DH will eat it, then that will make LO grab up a bite. Or telling him he can spit it out if he doesn't like it. I generally don't stress about it though, and just make sure it's visible on his plate. He might taste it the 3rd or 6th time he sees it.

@Mrs. Pen: @yellowbird: funny how we all have to rely on cartoon characters since our children won't even listen to us.

A lot of the time he wants what I'm eating. So if I sit down and take a bite of something he usually wants it. Other times if I just put the food on his plate and not call attention to it he'll usually try it.

@bpcmarj: we watched that episode like three times this weekend while she was sick! I will have to remember to sing the little song- reminding her about "first you take a turn, then you get it back" usually helps with sharing, so maybe the try something new one will too.

Let me start by saying C is a pretty good eater- she eats a decently wide variety of foods (for a toddler) and even likes vegetables (frozen, but whatever).

So generally I respect the things she likes it doesn't like, but sometimes she just won't even taste something, which is extra annoying when it's something I know she would like. I would like to get to the point where she will just take one bite of everything offered, but short of holding her mouth open and shoving it in, I'm not sure how to do it.

If your toddler will taste everything, even if they don't eat the whole serving, how did you do it?

Oh and I am not above things like letting her dip her steamed broccoli in ketchup. :)
