LO only poops about once a week, and has been like that since she was about 3 months old. However, she's only shown discomfort one or two times while pooping (she was sick and a bit dehydrated, I think). Maybe you could talk to your pediatrician about probiotics?

Prune juice is what my son's ped recommended at the time. Like a teaspoon in his milk and it should help. I never got a chance to try it b/c he pooped the next day (8th day).

probiotics and prune juice. olive is still ebf at 14 months, and she's been constipated lately. we've been giving her lots of prunes and it definitely starts working within 24 hours.

when charlie was constipated for 11 days, our ped said to give him diluted pear or prune juice. you can give a lot! maybe 50% diluted.

Lil Miss Banana only poops every 2-3 days too. I asked my ped about it and she said it's normal for BF babies to not poop every single day. She recommended diluted apple or pear juice when things get really bad for her.

My LO had the same issues (EBF, but would go days without pooping). Our pedi said its normal for EBF babies to go days with out pooping. LO was so uncomfortable, the pedi suggested a little prune juice (organic prune juice, no sugar added) in a bottle with breast milk. That did the trick every time. Surprisingly LO didn't mind the taste.

We also tried everything before resorting to prune juice.

@mrs. wagon: What about adding a probiotic to the milk? I swear my them for my little guy it has helped alot. We did start him on some pear juice and water to help get things moving at about 4 months old.

I learned a lot about poop but not as much as mrbee with my little guy. Green poop goes through too fast (yay for fixing that), and brown poop is going through slow. Slow is normal for adults but not so much for EBF infants. So that is a signal of something (does not necessarily mean bad or horrible).

My dr said up to 10-14 days is ok for EBF babies. My LO goes maybe once a week? But when she goes she goes! Lol. As long as its not hard coming out your LO isn't constipated.

One time my LO went 10 days without pooping...and then of course decided to finally go when we were at the Museum of Science in Boston. That was a fun experience.

Anyways the only advice our doctor gave was the rectal thermometer and warm baths. Maybe you could try giving her some prunes if you're comfortable starting solids (if you haven't already)?

J was like this! He'd go up to 7 days, made me crazy! I called the pediatrician and he suggested a mixture of 2oz water, 2oz prune juice (didn't work), the rectal thermometer (sometimes worked) and if it went past a week to use a pediatric suppository - ugh, I HATED to use these, but it worked like a charm. And thankfully, I didn't have to use them more than twice.
It's not uncommon for a breastfed baby to go days without pooping, especially during a growth spurt because they're just absorbing the nutrients. But if she's uncomfortable or is straining to poo, I'd call the pediatrician just to see what they suggest. Poor thing :( It was so sad seeing DS like that.

@brownie: when she does poop, the consistency varies. Sometimes it's thick, sticky light brown poop and sometimes it's the regular runny, mucusy, yellowish poop. I have not changed my diet at all, but I have recently started distributing my pumped milk because she was having green gassy poops from too much foremilk. I don't know if it was a coincidence (no more green poop though)...

Have you eaten something different? It could be a new food (in our case it was dairy and soy) in your diet.

Does it seem like breastfed poop or does it seem like constipated poop? My son was constipated and it wasn't nuggets but it was much thicker and sometimes formed. I swear that was constipation.

Oh no! LO went almost 2 weeks when she was EBF without a poop and her Dr. told us to give her diluted apple juice! It was one ounce apple juice + one ounce water a few times a day....it got E going!

So LMW is 5.5 months and exclusively breastfed (well, exclusively fed pumped milk in bottles) and for the past month or so, she only poops a couple of times a week. After she has a crazy throw-away-the-outfit explosion, she's happy for a day, and then gets cranky and crampy for two or three days until she explodes again. She does so well after she poops, but when she hasn't pooped in days, it's hard for her to fall asleep and stay asleep. She farts like crazy and it smells like death, but no poops!

We've tried everything we know of: cycling her legs, massaging her tummy, lots of tummy time, lots of vertical exersaucer time (this is usually when she poops), rectal thermometer, and even dressing her in her best outfits (inevitably this is when she poops....). Since Wagon Jr. had the opposite problem (pooped like 5 times a day at this age!) I am at a loss... what to do? nothing? Everything I read simply says "breastfed babies are rarely constipated." Do we just deal with the baby full of poo?
