Ah this thread makes me feel better. I felt like this was some sort of super secret skill that I was behind the trend on. I will just keep offering (will probably focus my efforts on straw cups) and give it time. Thanks everyone!!

We went straight to a straw cup & showed him how to drink from it and offered water on really hot days (esp the heat wave we just went through). We also only fill it up halfway so it was easier/lighter for him to carry around & didn't start until he was 10 months.

He also can drink from a bottle/cup if we hold it for him and say "small sips". He gets it.

We tried many different sippy cups. Then I finally tried the playex one that you can squeeze (heard about it from HB!) and within a week he had the straw cup down. I think this was around 9 months. Now at 16 months he sometimes uses a regular sippy for milk but only drinks water out of a straw cup. At 7 months I only offered it when we did solids. It wasn't until after a year that we offered water anytime.

My LO prefers an open cup - we just got the avent training cup so he can have a little more control. He gets how to use a straw but doesn't drink much unless I take the top off. This is what we have and like Philips AVENT 9 Ounce BPA Free Natural Drinking Cup, 1-Pack, Green

Miss A has been practicing with an Avent Sippy cup since six months and she's only just started to drinking a decent amount of water out of it at nine months. I offer it at meal times and usually help her tip it up but yesterday she guzzled 50mL without any help!

My LO is 7 months too and I just introduced the Playtex Lil Gripper straw cup two weeks ago. I give it to her after solids. She'll hold onto it and loves chewing on the straw. I'll squeeze the sides of the cup and water comes up and she'll suck a little but she doesn't totally get it just yet, or maybe she just doesn't like water. I'll just keep giving it to her and hope she'll figure it out one of these days!

I'm still working on sippy cups at 11 months old. He seems happier with silicon spouts than harder ones. Tommy Tippee is our current experiment. He hated Zoli.

We just would help tip back the sippy cup for him and offer it at every meal. It probably took him a few weeks before he started to lift the sippy on his own. We introduced straw cups at 12 months and he took longer figuring those out than the sippy!

Another vote for the Zoli. Sippy cups never worked, and the Zoili was a lifesaver. After he got the hang of it, the transition to a normal straw cup was easy.

Nothing has really worked for us. At 10 months she is finally taking to the cheapo ikea ones (spout.) I haven't put formula in then though. Usually watered down apple juice.

I've been sucking water up in a straw and letting him drink from the other end.
I also let him drink straight from a cup too. He sees his big sister doing it and I can tell he wants to try too!
He does well! :) (7 months old!)

@LaineysMom: kind of! do you just stop the water with your finger on the bottom of the straw and let her suck the water out from the other end?

@petunia354: the regular sippy didn't work for us. After a few weeks, DD started to love her Zoli. To practice, I would put water in a regular straw then let DD suck it out.. Does that make sense?

We went to a straw cup too, she hated the regular kind. If you blow into the straw, it forces the liquid up and it shows them whats in the cup. She seemed to catch on fast after we tried that.

She never took to a sippy, we had better luck with a straw cup. Basically, a traditional bendy straw in a cup or the take n toss ones. Some of those spill proof cups are so hard to sip out of.

LO is 7 months and at his 6 month appt his ped told us to start inroducing solids and a sippy cup. I tried a more tradiontal sippy that you tip up and one with a straw and he just doesn't "get it".We've tried it a few times and I think he managed to get some water, but I still don't think he really understands. Did you just offer it with solids? Do you offer water in a sippy throughout the day? Does it just take time for them to get used to it?
