My mom has always had problems with ants and when they start coming in she mixes a little corn syrup and Borax and puts some about the size of a quarter or two on a small strip of cardboard and they go crazy for it and die right away. It doesn't take care of the nest but it works better than the baits. Don't have it where pets or kids can get it though. I don't think Botax is that bad but I wouldn't want a dog licking it.

@Mrs. Goose: I'm guessing you mean liquid dish soap?

Ugh. I put the terro baits out this morning and I still see a ton of ants! The directions say it could take up to 2 weeks to get rid of them! Its thanksgiving in a couple days, and I don't want to be spending the holidays with the ants!

We sprayed liquid fish soap mixed with water on them and anywhere we saw them travelling to or from. It kills them and is supposed to get rid of the scent they leave as a trail for other ants. It worked for us in our kitchen/dining room beside our patio door and this year we didn't have a huge problem like last year. We maybe had 5 ants this year. We had initially bought the raid bait traps I think, but they did nothing.

I second the Terro liquid baits. It does take bit for them to bring it back to their nest to wipe them out but they work. And then of course containing any sources of food (we usually keep a messy kitchen) and blocking off any points of entry. We've had them a few times and it's gross!

I tried the cinnamon tricks and such and the ants didn't really care.

We have issues with small black ants. This past summer, I was able to curb them inside using cinnamon (just sprinkled around the holes in the brick where they were coming in) and on the outside by sprinkling corn starch around their mounds. I don't like to use any type of pesticide due to cats/toddler but these worked great.

We've had lots of problems in our new house with tiny black ants. The main colony was in the attic, and they were in the walls. We tried traps, bait, and homemade borax traps for months. It would help for a while, then they'd show back up. We finally had to set off multiple fogger bombs in the attic and crawlspace. They show back up on occasion, and we use the liquid bait as soon as we see them. Hopefully they're not as bad in your house!

@avivoca: is there a way to tell if they are coming from the walls?

I can't seem to tell where exactly they are coming from.

Where are they coming in? We had a huge problem a couple of years ago and it took setting baits, finding the colony outside, and setting it on fire (my husband went a bit overboard). This year we had a bad problem but it turns out that they had built a nest in my drill battery of all places. Once I got rid of that, they were gone.

We had ants at an old apartment and could see they were coming in through a window. We sprinkled cinnamon along the windowsill and they stopped coming in, apparently they won't cross cinnamon?

For cleaning up ants that have swallowed the bait and died I've read you should vacuum them up and never crush them because apparently some scent released when they're crushed attracts other ants? Not sure how true it is but it seemed to work for us.

Ants won't cross baby powder, so if you sprinkle a line of that where they're coming in it should help. You do want them to take the poison back to their house, though, so if you could somehow corral them (make them a little path with flour to the trap maybe?) then they wouldn't be everywhere, at least.

We had awful ants this summer/fall. Terro was the only thing that got rid of them. The people at the hardware store said it was a bad year for them in our neighborhood (Brooklyn), and everyone I know who had them had these particularly aggressive ones that seemed to come from nowhere - like literally out of the floors/walls, and there was very little to get rid of them. Strangely, my mom in NC had the same thing!

@catomd00: What does the flour do?

@macintosh: I'm using the Terro liquid ant baits. Will the ants go away after a bit? Do you know how long it takes?Or am I supposed to clean up the ants somehow? Right now they are all around the bait, and some are going around the counter.

Kitchen, I'd empty the counters and disinfect thoroughly for starters. I agree the liquid bait is best. And lastly we typically treat the outside of the house so that they are leaving before getting close to entering.

We had ants coming in through a couple of small openings near our fireplace and a window. I read online that ants don't like cinnamon, so I put a little mound of cinnamon right where they were coming in, and they completely stopped. That only worked because we could see exactly where they were coming in though.

I woke up this morning to a kitchen counter with ants squirming all over! I've set ant baits, but I don't know what else to do. They keep coming out and I can't seem to get rid of them. The ant bait says that not to disturb the ants, but am I just supposed to leave them trailing all over?

Any advice on what I should do?Any way to get rid of them faster?
