@winniebee: LO ate food that he threw on the floor the other day. Ugh! We're going through the same thing here.

@BeachMama: DH spent a weekend of taking LO up to his crib and leaving him there for a minute every time he threw food. he does it a lot less now!

@winniebee: sometimes, to get LO to eat, I leave his high chair tray on the floor and he'll happily eat it all. even if he screamed at it 5 minutes prior -.-

I also have a 17 month old and he throws food when he's all done. I just say "we don't throw food" very sternly and ask him if he's done (which he'll usually nod yes) so I take him out of the high chair. ANd then he proceeds to eat some of the food off the floor before I have a chance to pick it up. Lovely.

I have a hard time with this, too. I usually give her one chance after she does it once. She will drop food and I'll tell her we don't drop food on the ground. Then I'll say, Are you all done? If she drops food again or she says all done, I'll pull her out of her chair. If she doesn't' do it again, she gets another chance to stay in the chair. Just one chance, though. :)

I wish I knew. My LO is younger (11 months) but if she decides she doesn't like something she will hand feed it to the dog! If it's a pouch, she tosses it on the floor with all her might!

Thanks guys. Glad to know I'm not the only one dealing with this. I think I may try to keep her in the chair after she's done, til we are done. We've been telling her to keep her food on her tray or hand it to us but it just doesn't register.

She also likes to scream and yell a lot when she's eating, which can be rough in restaurants. I'm trying to enforce using inside voices but I just don't think she's old enough to get it. Table manners are a big thing for me. My parents always enforced them and I remember having to sit quietly, bored out of my mind, waiting for my parents to finish dinner. I refuse to have a child that screams and yells when we're out eating, so I hope this "training" starts kicking in!

we also had this problem a bit earlier on (LO is now 17 months) -- we pointed to the food on the ground, made a sad face and said 'no no we don't throw food on the ground'. i can't remember exactly how we did it, but we taught him to hand us the food if he was done. if i didn't notice and take it away from him after a few minutes it would usually end up on the floor.
he's mostly reliable with handing us the food when he's full!

I clean off her tray and make her sit there until we are done. Our doctor suggested we make her sit while the rest of the family finishes and I agree, otherwise one of us has to rush/quit eating to supervise her while she plays. I'll give her a book or toy to play with while we finish dinner.

Edit: she throws on the floor to the dog who is always begging below her, she is "sharing."

We've been dealing with this too and I know exactly what you mean about scolding her and then seeing in her eyes that she has no idea what you are talking about. We use signs for "more" and "all done" and if I see her playing with her food I ask her if she's all done or if she wants more. Usually that will probe her to continue eating if she does want to eat more.

Somewhere along the lines as she was holding up food ready to drop it on the floor I said to her, "A, we don't throw our food on the floor. If you are done, give it to momma". And she did. So now when she's playing with her food and I ask "are you all done or do you want more", if she's done she'll hand me the food. She likes to help clean up. It's really quite cute.

This is how most nights go and we really do try and watch her to prevent as much throwing as possible and most times we are successful. Every now and again she'll throw something but she's done well. We just try and be consistent with how we respond to what she does in hopes that it will eventually kick in.

Also, similar to @pinkcupcake, sometimes I only offer a few items at a time particularly if there was something on her plate she did not want to eat and it was throwing her off for everything else.

This is such an annoying phase! My LO also threw food off her plate when she was done, or if it was something she didn't want to eat. We also have dogs, so she thought it was great fun to watch them gobble up whatever she threw.

First, we put the dogs away during mealtime. Second, I started to offer her little servings of food. Just a couple bites. When she finished those, I offered her more. I encouraged her to hand me food that she didn't want to eat. When she handed it to me rather than throw it, I showered her with tons of praise.

I do struggle with letting her out of the high chair. Usually she can only sit and eat quietly for about 10 minutes before asking to be let out. I used to keep her in the chair, but that usually led to everything being thrown onto the floor... so now I just let her out when she asks.

She's 20 months now and is finally starting to not throw food (knock on wood...). I really think it's a phase (a tough, annoying phase!), and you kinda have to just stick it out :(

I wish I knew! I feel like LO should have better eating manners by now (16.5 month), but she is bad for throwing not only her food but her utensils and cup on the floor. We taught her to say done when she is finished but usually doesnt say it until she has thrown everything on the floor.

DD is 17 months. At mealtimes, she often ends up throwing her food on the floor when she's had enough. When this happens, I scold her, tell her that we don't throw food on the floor, take away her plate and get her down from the high chair. But since she's doing it because she's "all done" I don't feel like she's getting the message that throwing her food on the floor is wrong. I almost feel like I'm rewarding her behavior by giving her what she wants.....out of the chair.

She also does it if there's something on her plate she doesn't want. When that's the case, I take her plate away and tell her she's all done.

How do you handle LO throwing food on the floor? How can I teach her to tell me she's "all done" instead of throwing the food on the floor?
