@Andrea: I came across a few links yesterday that I thought would be helpful to post here. I hope you're doing ok up there.

This is a registry that was set up and helps those affected in Brooklyn: http://www.amazon.com/registry/wedding/32TAA123PJR42

More information about that effort: http://interoccupy.net/occupysandy/

I'd like to find out more about how to help Staten Island and New Jersey.

I donated to the Humane Society in Atlantic City, NJ since animals are often forgotten about in natural disasters. This is their website: http://www.hsacpet.org/

@Kcrzn89: wonderful!!!!! Yes, I've also been reading to differentiate between what's for men, women, and children. I would've never known to do that.

I am working on supplies with our church to send up there. We are using walmart bags and putting one throw blanket, a small tolietry kit, a cheap can opener, a box of matches or a lighter, A flashlight with one set of batteries, and then we add tampons/pads to some of the bags and mark for woman only on that bag. We also made bags for babies. We put a baby blanket diapers, and wipes in each bag along with a small toy. We marked if it was for a boy/girl and what size diapers was in it. Each bag had a towel in it and 1 wash cloth and pair of work gloves. Never thought about trash bags though. :( They are planning to take it this week.

@sweetooth: I'm going to try and find a local group that will organize these types of donations. They will drive the donations straight to these neighborhoods. I usually donate money but I don't live very far from these neighborhoods so I feel like I can do more this time.

I donated to Red Cross, but I would also love to send supplies that would help. Are you sending these items somewhere specific?

I'm feeling ashamed that I haven't done anything already, but our family was dealing with our own issues up until last night so I haven't been focused on much else.

I've been doing some research and it looks like people really need the below items so I'm going to make a trip to Costco since they sell most of these things.

-Work Gloves
-Heavy Duty Garbage Bags
-Flashlights, C and D Batteries
-Sweatshirts and Jackets
-Underwear
-Diapers and Wipes
-Blankets
-Towels
-Tampons
-HOT food

How do you like to help people in disaster relief situations?
