I think the key for naptime will be to get rid of the sleep associations he has formed (mainly being held for naps) - are you against crying it out? Mrs. Pinata wrote a post about nap training at 4 months which you might find useful: http://www.hellobee.com/2015/05/05/nap-training-at-4-months/

For night time sleep, it sounds like he's hit the 4 month sleep regression. There's a ton of information out there on that, but if you choose to go the nap training route (above), the same method can be used for night sleep training as well.

My DD has always been a pretty decent sleeper at night, but for the majority of my maternity leave, she either took naps on me, or if I was lucky, in her swing. When my maternity leave was drawing to an end and I knew I had to get her to nap independently (I work from home when she's napping), I started keeping a note pad of when she slept, so I could get a feel of her average awake time between naps. Then, based on that awake time, I started putting her down for one nap a day in the bassinet (in her sleep sack), gradually moving it till all her naps were in the bassinet. Finally, I started moving naps to her crib one at a time, till all naps were in the crib. I still base her naps on awake time as opposed to trying to implement them at fixed times, and it works for us. FYI - she's 6 months old, but 4 months adjusted, and her max wake time is roughly 1.5 hours.

Just like @avivoca: sad, we tend to go with the flow for daytime naps and let her nap wherever she can. However, my DD's nighttime sleep started getting awful at the age yours is at, and just got worse and worse until we did CIO at 4.5 months, which was tough but worked. For reasons I won't get into we had to re-do CIO at 9.5 months and it was much easier because we set the foundation. My daughter had classic bad sleep associations. I liked Dr. Ferber's book Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems.

@FaithFertility: well it's not really daycare. My mom will be watching him full time and I don't want her to stick holding him too.

Read Weissbluth, familiarize yourself with the theories behind baby sleep, if you haven't already.

I would start by looking at sleep cues and awake times.

There's a sleep regression happening right now, so that's probably part of your struggles. As for me, I also go with the flow and my first baby napped exclusively in the swing to get her needed sleep at home. My second likes to be held, so I currently hold her for most naps. You could try babywearing.

Drowsy but awake never worked for either kid. So I basically bounce my second to sleep and then put her in the crib with her sound machine on. Once that stops working, I'll do a little CIO.

We went from the PNP straight to the crib and it worked fine for us.

I am a go with the flow mom, and do what w
Ever works!
He will figure it out at daycare!
DD always napped better at her sitters and even put her self to sleep which she really never did for us!

Do what you gotta do!

We were in the same boat and I was worried when I returned to work. I'm not sure what daycare did but he managed to nap there, while still wanting to nap on us at home.

He's still a cuddler and will sleep on us if he can but is fine being put down too.

Alright moms so here it is.....

Our lo for the first few weeks did great.
Slept during the day with no issues. But now in order for him to nap he must be held. If we try to put him down naps last like 15-20 mins which make for a very cranky baby all day becuase he is so overtired. So we have been holding him due to the fact that he needs sleep. For this issue I am simply just curious if anyone has pointers or ideas on how to get him to nap alone? I go back to work in four weeks and he needs to be able to nap with out me.

Night time- so we have a routine. Bath, book, boob 😊. Then he sleeps for about 2 hrs. (So we don't go to bed yet) and then last feeding once he wakes up, sleep sack and bassinet. It was working great but lately instead of going to sleep he feels it's awake time and wants to party! Since I am not at work I can deal but when I go back I will be a zombie! I teach kindergarten and that just won't work. So we apparently are doing something wrong! Any pointers on how to get him to know it's bed time and go to sleep? I read several things but I just don't know. One said put him down when Drowsy we have been trying that and he just fights sleep till he is hysterically crying. I have tried not touching same thing. I used to be able to just rub his head for about 5 mins and he would fall asleep... now that doesn't work. We need some pointers from experienced parents!!!

Also he is almost 4 months and he currently will sleep from 10 or 11 till 5 or 6. So we get some good sleep. This is our longest stretch.

Oh also he is almost too big for the bassinet so I was thinking using the pack and play and then slowly transitioning to the crib. He is basically the length of the bassinet now. So I am curious if this may be part of our struggle.
