@Foodnerd81: I hope it works for you! I try to make it fun, like a game, rather than as a "I'm counting to five" type of threat. I just say, "want to see how fast you can do it!? Do you think you can do it before ten? Let's see!" It's been working like magic for about 2 weeks now. Not sure how long it will last, but it's a big help right now!

@yoursilverlining: we sing ALL the Daniel tiger songs. I'd be embarrassed if they didn't work so well!

@78h2o: I'm going to try the beating the clock thing. She only wants to do the stairs herself but she gets so distracted and is soooooo sloooooow. Maybe I can get her to keep moving this way- though I don't want her to be running on the stairs of course.

@illumina: @Jess1483: I'm pretty sure they have that episode on YouTube, or available via iTunes! DT songs really, really help us. Of course, now LO is 3 and quite sassy, and when I remind her of that song she will tell me that "I'm not frustrated!" when clearly, she totally is. But, it worked REALLY well for a while!!

Oh man, this is my daughter all the way! She's 2.5 though, so a little older. The upside to all the independence is that she really can do a lot for herself! She can mostly dress herself, change her own wet diaper, etc.

Right now she is really into beating the clock, so if she wants to do something but is taking too long, I'll start counting and we see'll how fast she can do it. That has really been helping lately. Another thing that helps is two give her two acceptable choices... So with the car seat, I'll say,"do you want to do the top or the bottom? Or, "do you want mommy to do it or should we do it together?" (If she can't do it herself, she likes to do it together).

@Foodnerd81: I might try the clipping one side in each next time, thanks!

@yoursilverlining: I'm guessing we probably don't get Daniel Tiger over here, at least I've not seen it before, but that sounds like a good song!

As far as clipping goes, I clip the bottom part and she clips the chest clip together. That has drastically reduced the tantrums getting into the carseat. I don't think the UK has chest clips though, so maybe do like @Foodnerd does? For getting dressed, I usually put the shirt on top of her head and let her pull it down over her head. Then she lets me guide her hands into the sleeves. If we have a bit of time (usually on weekends or before bed), I let her try to figure it out before stepping in.

DS is still letting me help him get dressed at 2 years old, but he did have a super independent phase a few months back where he wanted ZERO help from me and would get upset if I tried.

We just had to step back and let him do his things. It slowed things down a bit, but when he realized he needed a little bit of help, he'd let me indirectly. He's over that phase now, but I understand the frustration. Sorry! Hope it passes soon or that she'll have a better grasp on asking for help more reluctantly.

Does she like Daniel Tiger? There is a song/episode about asking for help when you get frustrated. “When you’re feeeeeeeling frustrated….take a step back! And ask for help!” :silly: and when LO is getting worked up about her clothes, I let her work it out but also remind her of that song and that I can help her to do it herself.

One other tip is that LO is better at doing pants if they are stretchy leggings (not jeans or real type pants), and she sits down, puts her feet into the leg holes, then stands up and pulls them up from there.

Hope these ideas help!

@illumina: ugh. The clipping herself in! I think our girls would get along really well.

For clipping usually I do the first side (so I know she is somewhat secured) and she can do the second side. If she has trouble, sometimes I hope the center clip part and she inserts the other piece into it. So she feels like she is doing it herself but I can help guide it in right.

@LuLu Mom: @Foodnerd81: she is a little better at putting on shorts, but unfortunately Summer in the U.K. is a little too cold for shorts most of the time!

Actually come to think of it, it's not just the dressing...we've had tantrums recently because she couldn't clip herself into the car seat or pushchair!

I was also going to say shorts. c will let me hand her shorts facing the right way, and will usually allow me to guide her leg into the right leg opening, then she pulls them up to her knees, stands up, and we pull them up to her waist together. She also likes to put her t shirts on herself but she's actually pretty good at those and only needs a tiny bit of guidance for the arms, as long as the shirt is a little big.

Do you have pants or shorts that are looser than leggings? Might be easier for her? When it's really frustrating I try to remind myself that these are important life skills that she needs to learn some time.

Oh and for shoes, c has one pair of maryjanes with an easy "buckle" (Velcro) that she can actually get on herself. The rest she needs help with but she is satisfied if she can get them mostly on and I help with pulling the heel up, as long as I then let her fasten the Velcro strap.

Oh this is very familiar to me :) We had to wait it out and just let her take her time. Also what helped us was dresses, she would let me put those on so all summer she wears dresses with shorts underneath, which are easier for her to get on!

Please help! LO is 22 months and every time she has to get dressed it ends in a huge tantrum. I really feel for her, she is trying so hard to put her trousers and shoes on but she can't quite figure it out. When we aren't pushed for time, I leave her trying to figure out her leggings (for some reason she'll let me put her t-shirt on, but not her bottoms!) and tell her to call for me if she needs help. Then after about 2 minutes she wants help so I go back in and she's all like "go away!" again :(

If I help her, she freaks out and if I let her do it herself she cries in frustration until I end up doing it and then we get the tantrum anyway!
