I know it's cold on your side of the world at the moment but letting LO's outside with no pants is a good way to help them develop awareness of their bodily functions. Aside from that I second (third?) the suggestion to let them observe you in the bathroom and try sitting them on the potty or toilet before bath time.

ETA I really believe that knowing how everything works is half the battle with potty training / learning.

Same as everyone - let her see you use it. I just did that, and bought a little potty, and just put it in her room. She eventually just figured it out.

We are thinking about potty training now that LO is 19 months. She ALWAYS has to come to the bathroom with me and is very interested in what is happening when we are in there. Has anyone done a review of potty seats on HB? I have no idea if one is any different/better than another… but we'll have to buy one soon!

I bought a small potty for J and would sit him on it when I was using the potty when he was around a year old. Making it something that was normal got him into the idea of using it.
He's 3 now and isn't fully potty trained but we continue to encourage him. (He uses it at home and at school and even when we're out at a restaurant or the mall. It's really when he's too interested in playing - at the park, skating, etc., that he doesn't want to use the potty. That's what we're working on now.)

I bought a little potty and told her about it and if she was in the bathroom with me, I would tell her the steps that I was taking, etc. We also got this Potty Time dvd from the library that teaches the signs for potty, wipe, wash, etc and has catchy songs and she was only 15 months old when we watched it but she caught on after just watching it once and started using the signs for potty and wipe right away. She hasn't seen it in months (19 months old now) but she still remembers the songs and will tell me the next step, even though she hasn't used the potty on her own yet. When I change her diaper I always say "you pooped/peed" etc to get the connection or if I see her very obviously pooping I wish ask if she needs to use the potty (usually she says no though haha). I am not pushing it, just trying to get the concepts there.

Just let her watch you for a bit. At some point around that age, E started following me into the bathroom and peering close at my crotch, wondering what the noise was. She was intrigued. I'd tell her that i was peeing and that someday she won't need diapers to pee anymore. Now she loves to announce it when I go ("PEEEEEE") and hand me toilet paper :meh: . They're just very curious and want to know what you're doing and they pick up that it's different from what THEY do.

She watches me go the bathroom. I make sure she sees the pee pee so she gets what it is exactly I am doing.

At day care, class of 7, all within 4months of age, the teachers are taking them and sitting them on the potty twice a day. Then they have them wipe, flush, and wash their hands, so they get use to it all. They also are reading books on it during story time.

At home we are sitting her on the potty before bath. She even peed in the potty, I am sure it was a fluke, but she had this look like what is going on. But hopefully a couple more times she will get what pee pee exactly is and the sensation of when she needs to go.

I would take her in the bathroom with you whenever possible, it's important for her to see the act being done. You don't need to be home alone with her for her to come into the bathroom. Also get a potty chair and don't force her, but ask if she wants to sit on it before bath (that's how we started) and you sit on the big one while she does it.

A book isn't as good as actually showing her what it is, and making it not scary. Don't' force it though.

I def think you need to let her see you using the potty!

Oh look mommy uses the potty - one day you will too!
Mommy wears underwear, not diapers - one day You can wear diapers too!

I would get a small potty chair (we used bjorn) and just put it in the bathroom. Her curiosity will get the best of her and you can tell her its her own little potty and start asking her to sit on it

My daughter is 19 months old, an only child, in a daycare where she and the other kids are the same age (thus no exposure to older kids using a potty), and my husband and I have a very similar work schedule so rarely is one of us at home alone with her (and therefore there's little opportunity for her to see one of us using a bathroom). So this all means that a potty is a complete unknown to her.

She has zero readiness signs, so I'm not worried about training her right now, but I'd like to at least introduce the idea to her, since she's catching on to things so quickly right now. I'd love any tips folks may have for how to do this when she doesn't have any surrounding factors to make the connection or reinforcements for her? Videos? Buy a potty and teach her what it is? Something else? A few folks told me to let her observe me using the bathroom, but I'm not all that comfortable doing that (though maybe I need to get over it?) Would love folks' tips, thanks!
