@mrbee: Usually just leaving them bunched in a bowl on the counter, they are brown and getting soft by the end of the week. She still eats them, they are just messy. These were pretty green but they stayed longer then I thought.

@mrbee: I just tried this this week. I separated about 5 bananas and stored them in a plastic grocery bag (not individually). The skins got some brown spots but the banana insides were pretty firm still.

I've heard that you should separate them, then wrap the stems with saran wrap... it prevents the ethylene gas from ripening the banana! Random link on it:

http://www.instructables.com/id/Keep-Bananas-Fresh-Longer-slices-too/step2/Separate-then-Wrap-the-Stems/

A plastic bag can work as well as a green bag... was surprised by that:

Green bags definitely work!

We go through bananas really quickly now so I haven't used them in a while, but I did when it was just me and DH.

@TemperanceBrennan: Great tips! Thanks!

Any one use one of those banana hangers? I just lay them in a bowl but does hanging them up help at all?

I also heard that if you take them all apart, they will ripen at different speeds, but if you leave them together, they will all ripen faster. We take them apart and it seems to work for us - but we also grocery shop every week.

Also, if you store them with apples, they will ripen faster because of the ethylene gas the produce.

I end up going to the store every week, although going every two weeks would be heaven (although it is some of the only "me" time I get). Right now I buy one bunch that is yellow and ready to eat now and a second bunch that is as green as I can find. We eat a lot of bananas in my household each week.

I've also heard that if you put bananas in the fridge they will not ripen anymore than when they are put in there despite the peel turning black.

The only thing we do is buy one bunch of ripe ones and one bunch of green ones that will ripen later in the week. I have heard those Green Bags work well for keeping produce fresh, but not sure about bananas.

My LO eats a banana every morning. It is part of her morning routine to drop her off at daycare.

However, we have a hard time keeping bananas. I usually have to shop for them on Sunday and only buy 5-6 to get us through the work week. After the post today, I would love to be able to grab enough bananas to last us two weeks but I don't know how to do it. Right now we just leave them in the fruit basket on the counter.
