The trash can is one I didn't want to lock up (ended up locking up our cabinets, because I don't have time for all that clean up!). I just kept the outside and lid REALLY clean, and changed the trash often enough so she couldn't reach in. This allowed me to constantly enforce that she's not allowed to play with it/in it, but if I got there too late there wasn't a gross trash mess. Thankfully she never thought to push it over!!
I would say her trash can obsession phase lasted... a month or two? Now she passes by it without a second thought, same with all the trashcans over the house.

@emg86: R hasn't figured out how to open our kitchen one yet. But she loves the recyling trash can next to it (no lid). And the bathroom trash. So gross.

@emg86: Wow, that is persistent! On the plus side, she's a go-getter... hee hee. I hope this is just a phase, and she finds something better to be interested in!

@Beehive: I tried turning it around and she was able to push it enough to open the dang lid again!!! I never win, lol.

@looch: Yeah, I think that's my plan b. My husband has the same thinking and I'm the one cleaning up messes, lol.

What usually helps us is turning the can around so the step is facing the wall/corner (and it opens toward the corner). We do this when he has days he's "interested" in the garbage can.

@looch: I agree...just get a smaller can and put it under the sink.

My husband would employ the opposite approach, he doesn't believe in locking things up, THEY HAVE TO LEARN, he says, lol.

I, on the other hand, do not want to deal with the mess. So, for the time being, I would get a smaller can and put it under the sink, with a cabinet lock.

Would a door or cabinet lock work on it? Or do they sell garbage can locks?

We have a Simplehuman trash can. She's learned how to step on it so the lid opens and how to just reach up and open the lid. She's tall enough she can get her hands in there and digs stuff out. The can is too tall for the pantry and under cabinets. There's no way to close off our kitchen either with a baby gate, we have a very open floor plan. Any ideas? I currently moved it to our formal dining room...it isn't close to the kitchen but there's a gate to stop her.
