@abbydabbydoodlebug: if you want SUPER cheap get some drawer lining like the picture below and cut out a rectangle. Our dollar store actually sells 4 placemats for $1 in the same material

@Charm54: @Adira: well I already have a bunch of ikea ones and would rather not buy more plates, even though I agree that oxo is awesome.

We have the OXO plates too and no issues with them - they don't slide around on our wood tables.

@Beehive: Hmm. I could try switching to regular plates I guess. It makes me nervous! The only thing is they don't have a lip so scooping stuff would be tricky for her. We don't currently use placemats, so maybe I can just get fabric ones that are washable.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: If your DD isn't a thrower, have you tried using normal plates you use for your own food? Around that age we switched to ceramic on a placemat, which has worked out great. Nothing fancy of course, but just our regular everyday plates. The weight might keep them from sliding around.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I have the OXO cups/plates and they do have a good grip on them and they don't slide....though I hardly ever use them anymore because the happy mat is so awesome and easy to clean.

My DD isn't a thrower and doesn't usually try to pick her plate up unless she's handing it to me because she's finished. She just gets mad when she tries to poke or scoop her food and the bowl/plate slides across the table and she can't get it on her utensil. We have a Summer infant mat that has a crumb catcher on the edge, but it gets in the way. Plus, it's a bumpy uneven surface because of the suction cups.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: maybe see if anyone is selling them used. That might be cheaper than buying new.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: We love our EZPZ too! I use it for my little guy who sits at the table in the Stokke. He has peeled up the corner and dumped it out but it really does not go sliding around at all.

@Charm54: Dang, these sound awesome. Not sure if I want to drop that kind of $$$ on a plate.... ugh. But maybe you're right that it's worth it! Thank you!

@gingerbebe: My DH is obsessed with OXO stuff, so I'll definitely check it out.

@bluestriped bee: totally practical...her bowl and plates used to go flying, but I haven't had this problem at all with the mat. I think because it's pretty big and heavy to throw, plus the suction is incredible. I'm in Canada so no deal for me, I think I paid $30 for it - worth every penny and I will definitely be buying another for #2!

I was going to 2nd the EZPZ mat. I haven't gotten one myself, but I'd like to for baby #2. The Baby Guy absolutely RAVES about them.

Get an EZPZ happy mat!! It's a mat/plate in one combo that completely sticks to the table (way better than any bowl or plate that claimed to suction) And it is so easy to wash. Seriously - one of my favourite toddler gear items ever. We use ours for every single meal. They also make a bowl/mat combo!

My DD is 18 months and pretty much eating off of a plate with utensils full time. The problem is we have a wood table and her plates are ikea ones with no silicone on the bottom so they slip all over and she gets super mad. I end up having to hold the plate with one hand and eat my food with the other. What do you use to keep plates from going everywhere?
