Rinse it under cold water then stick it in an air tight container in the fridge. It stays green 2-3 days this way.

All the above is correct, but actually if they are at the perfect ripeness they just won't go brown. Most people tend to cut them open when they are a tad overripe. (We eat a couple kilos of avocados weekly, so I've had a lot of experimenting.)

@sarbear: when you do plastic wrap make sure it is pressed all the way down and there is no air getting to it. That is what turns it brown. :)

I keep lemon juice in a mini travel sized squirt bottle and i squirt it on avocados, bananas, and apples all the time. Totally works!

I squirt lemon juice and then cling wrap - the trick is to get all the avocado flesh touching the cling film.
Our local supermarket sells bags of "baby" avocados and I love them! Perfect size for baby and no waste.

I saw on pinterest that laying lemon slices over the cut area will keep it green! I haven't tried it yet though..

I leave the pit and just throw it in tupperware. It never gets that brown, but I just thin slice the exposed face off when I get back to it, and the rest is fine.

Keep the pit in and then plastic wrap so it touches it and it is supposed to last. They also sell avocado preservers, but not sure how they actually work.

I keep the pit in the side we aren't eating. Also you can squeeze a film of lemon juice on it & that will help (my MIL has done this before & it worked well).

I leave the pit in it. Or, if I mash it up for guacamole, I keep the pit in the bowl.

I wrap the cut side in plastic wrap, then put it cut-side down in a small Pyrex container. Or, I guess I should say I used to do this... I am increasingly tolerant of brown avocado and usually just scrape the brown off the top.

i love avocados, but DH hates them, so it's just me and DS(who is 16 months and doesn't eat that much of them) who eats them. i hate throwing the unused portion out, but i can't seem to figure out how to prevent it from going brown. i tried the 'spray with pam and cover in plastic wrap' trick that i saw on Pinterest, but no dice. i see people pack them for their LO's lunch too but how do you keep it from going brown?
