@catgirl: he was complaining even when he was in pull ups. I did make sure the seat is as straight as I could with still being in the bubble.

@lilyofthewest: I used two boxes to make a makeshift foot rest and he loved it. Not one single complaint. Big thank you!

If it is the straps/control at play here, I got through this phase by essentially overtightening the straps when I put him in. He would complain they were too tight and then I would press the button to loosen the straps a little to the point they were the “right” snugness. He felt like he had “won” and the straps were looser.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I agree with a lot of others that this can just be an age thing - not liking to be strapped in, preferring to move. Also agree that dangling legs can cause lower back pain, we faced that when we switched DD to forward facing. For awhile we used an upside down foam cooler for all drives, now she only wants it when the drives are 45+ minutes.

A couple of other things, I don't know if he is potty trained but some kids feel a lot more of the seat when they switch from diapers to underwear. They lose a layer of padding and it can make their butt or lower back uncomfortable. The other is that the NextFit is a very "C" shaped seat which some kids find uncomfortable forward facing as it can put pressure on the lower back.

For forward-facing kids, sometimes dangling legs can cause low back pain. You could try giving him something to rest his legs on (like a foam cooler, a stack of pillows/blankets, or one of those inflatable things for airplanes) and see if it helps.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: yeah, I don’t think it is related to forward facing or rear facing, I think it’s related to your kid’s personality (and complaining level) and possibly control as someone mentioned above. Of course try to adjust straps or the seat or whatever and see if you can get it to be more comfortable, but hopefully it will be short lived if it’s psychological. I know we had a lot of conversations about car seats being for safety and even though they might be uncomfortable they are very necessary...a lot. Sigh

@Petitduck: yes, almost three. He’s been forward facing since a little bit before age 2.

@peachykeen: anything is worth a try- I’ll play with the straps. Thanks

@DesertDreams88: even with FF- maybe? I just have to make sure the seat is within the bubble.

He’s nearly 3, right? My kid did the exact same thing at that age. For months. Complained after a short distance. It was annoying, but she eventually stopped doing it. It also got better when we flipped to front facing just after 3, but she had mostly stopped complaining by then and we flipped because she maxed out the height, not due to her complaining, though I did consider it!

It was awful having to drive anywhere further than 10 minutes during this phase, coupled with a younger sibling who also didn’t like being in the car seat for very long.

My kid, age 3, really doesn't like the straps. Is it possible to recline it more?

@peachykeen: I agree - my kids also have both done this, they tell me the straps are hurting them.

DD1 went through this phase about the same age as your son and I remember reading about several other kids at that age too. I think it's just a phase and I don't think they're truly uncomfortable! I would check about moving the crotch buckle out further if you haven't already and make sure the shoulder straps are the right height (they can be at or below shoulders if RF and at or above if FF - moving one setting sometimes helps convince DD1 she's fine). But mainly I think it's a control thing at that age - sorry I'm not more help!

LO complains after maybe 2-3 miles of driving that his back or something hurts in his car seat. We have a Chicco NextFit. I watched some of their install videos including where the comfort flex thing goes- we have the zip and have had to remove and replace the padding after wash. I’m going to double check everything myself at the same time any advice or hacks to make his ride more comfortable.

When we can he prefers to walk to places and yet we can’t walk everywhere. I feel horrible he’s so miserable when we drive.
