Well. When I picked T's name I was aiming for something a little different but not trendy or too out there. I didn't know it was completely off the list though. Lol

it's funny because R's name is on the upward trend, but it's only in the 200/million range, so the graph looks skewed.

@lawbee11: I love our name. I think we did GREAT  When she was born my brother asked me if we were spelling it with a 'y' or an 'ie'. I said 'y' and he said "good, we wouldn't want her to end up dancing on a pole". Ummm..... thanks bro.

@Leialou: name meaning is super important to us, too!

@Mae: @Adira: another thing to keep in mind is that these charts don't really go back very far, relatively speaking. Alexander has been around for a very, very long time (Alexander the Great, anyone?), and so have names like William, Julia, Catherine, Mary, etc. Truly "timeless" names go back much farther than just the 1880s or 1890s. It doesn't make them better, necessarily, but it also doesn't mean that just because they may have recently surged in popularity again that they are trendy.

Again, it doesn't make much of a difference to me, but I agree-Alexander is timeless!

I had to re-read the section on Elizabeth being a boy/George as a girl name a couple times, haha. I thought they were going to go with Georgia George or Joan for John, but nope!

@Mae: I totally agree with you about timeless but popular. Charlotte is another that comes to mind. It's recently shot up in the charts but I think it's definitely a timeless name.

@Adira: Alexander is definitely not a fad name! Timeless for sure.

Great article, I love the science behind names! We are currently knee deep in names, it's harder the second time around finding something that fits our style, works well with his brother's name, and makes us both happy.

Interesting article! I have an uncommon name and always thought I would want the same for my children. I love biblical and timeless names for boys and a lot of those are popular right now. So popularity isn't as important to me as I thought it would be.

ETA: name meaning is the most important to me. I don't want my kids name to mean killer or something like that.

@Adira: I mean… it is just my opinion! And a biased one at that since my preference lies heavily with those names I'd classify as "timeless but popular"! I just don't feel it is fair to lump Sophia/Emma/Jacob/William type names together with Jayden/Aiden/Madison/Addison type names and call them all a fad because they are totally different IMO. :)

Interesting article. I think it is sort of impossible to pick a girl's name that is always timeless though. Some choices for boys NEVER go out of style (joseph, william, etc). But girls have definite extreme peaks and valleys for all of the names.

Especially right now when a lot of "timeless" names are "trendy" I think there should be another category. Example, sophia. Yes it is suuuuper popular right now, but its been on the charts basically forever. This is in stark contrast to a name like Madison that came out of absolutely nowhere and skyrocketed. IMO Madison is a "fad name" and Sophia is a "timeless name" that happens to be popular.

I suppose this difference matters to me because I do like a lot of the top 20 names but I don't think he's correct in calling them fads because although they are peaking in popularity right now, they've been around forever and will continue to be around forever.

I love name trends and things like this- but it does make it even harder to choose bc you overthink things even more!

We totally fall into the "great grandmothers names" category. But it was never super important that her name be totally different, just not top ten (Dh and I both have very popular names for our generation, especially him. One of those go by your last name because even name last initial is too common).
