I am from Saratoga Springs and second that it is an AWESOME place!!! just 35 mins north on i-87. Albany is mehh for kids.
We have 2 great parks, the Splash Pad at Gavin Park, amazing playgrounds, kid-friendly places to eat (Circus Cafe, Druthers) and a gorgeous downtown with street performers that my kid always likes (18m). If you want more info I'd be more than happy to talk about my town!

The state museum is free and there's a Sesame Street exhibit plus a carousel there. A cool restaurant right near there is the Albany Pump Station.

There's a fantastic park in Albany with awesome playgrounds and a pond a lots to do for burning energy. Let me find the name.
ETA: The Crossings of Colonie
Bonus points: there's a great restaurant less s than a mile away called Lanie's. But there are also lots of restaurants on Wolf road, a short drive from there. It's a main drag with lots of shopping and dining.

@Periwinkle: @teawithpaloma: @Alba4: Saratoga would be a great option depending on when the OP is going to be there. Track season starts the 21st and after that point lodging is going to be $$$$ if you can even find any. And it'll be crazy packed! On the flip side, @lady baltimore: you could do an afternoon at the races if that was your thing.

Loving these Albany related posts. I'm fairly new here and I'm sure any of these reccs would be great. Saratoga if the weather is good and the NYS Museum is really kid friendly if the weather is bad.

I'm from 20 minutes north of Albany, a town called Clifton Park. There's a big playground there at the Clifton Common and lots of restaurants and shopping. Saratoga is much cooler, but also much more expensive :silly: .

Although you are going to be heading east from Albany, you may have fun stopping for the night in Saratoga Springs which is about 45 minutes north of Albany on 87. So many great things to do... the state park would be great to walk around/play in and then there are so many fun things to do downtown (great places to eat, get ice cream, etc.).

Some ideas for fun stuff:

The suggestions above are all great towns too - they are definitely destinations - not as much going on in Albany.

If you're coming from the south and heading east of Albany, I would recommend either the Berkshires or Columbia County, NY. Some specific towns include: Great Barrington, MA; Lenox, MA; Stockbridge, MA; Hudson, NY; Chatham, NY. I grew up in that area so let me know if I can give more recommendations!

We are looking to break up a long drive later this month, and will be stopping overnight in the Albany, NY area. We will only be there from (probably) late afternoon until whenever we have to check out the next morning. Anyone have a suggestion of somewhere we can take LO (19 months) to let her burn off some cooped-up-in-the-car energy? Bonus points if we can get dinner in the area, too. It doesn't have to be a tourist attraction or kid-centric place; if there were an IKEA in the area, I'd go there.

I haven't booked a hotel/Air B&B yet, so I'm also open to suggestions about where to stay. We will be coming from the south and heading east from Albany, so we could stay a little ways in either of those two directions.
