@Banana330: Interesting. The only one he can even kind of keep in for maybe 5-10 seconds is the smallest - MAM for newborns. I feel like even the Soothis brand one is too hard/big.

@Littlebit: hahah - this is DH's thinking and his method when he stays up with the baby. I'm like - it's much too much work to try to hold it in all day for him. I give up after a few tries.

@buttermilk: I've heard good things about that one! I just ordered one to try last night on Amazon! FX'd!

@wrkbrk: lol! Reverse psychology on a newborn! I love it! He just turns his head or gags, so there's no even tempting him.

@rachiecakes: Girlfriend, you and I got a group of thumbsuckers! waahhh! I'm still trying to figure out how to get K to stop. *sigh*

@shopaholic: lol! I'm sorry :silly: J was the SAME WAY. I wasn't anti-paci from day one but he'd only take it for a minute before spitting it out. But oooohh he would fight to get those fists in his mouth, even in the hospital the nurses couldn't keep him swaddled.
Yep, going to be 4 and still a thumbsucker!
I'd keep trying with the paci, even just to give you a little break here and there.

@shopaholic: DS isnt here yet but the guy from Happiest Baby on the Block says to use reverse psychology and try to "pull it out" which will teach baby to suck and keep it in!

We just tried periodically for sleep or when she was upset. She never like Pacis until 8 weeks. Then all of a sudden she loved it. But only avent brand, randomly.

I was anti-paci in the beginning with DD as well but once she was bottle trained, she took the paci very well.

I held off on paci's a bit with DS as well but he just never took to them.. Like you, I tried many diff brands and tried to hold it in there for a bit to get the sucking going, but he didn't care for it. No thumb sucking, either.

I would just keep offering but maybe he's just not a paci-loving kid ;). Hopefully your little guy stretches out the time btwn his feedings soon and can learn to self soothe in other ways.

DD was pretty anti-paci till like 3-4 months... I just keep offering. Sometimes I literally had to shove it in and force her to keep it there bc I knew she needed it, lol.

We waited to introduce it until about 6 weeks but she didn't take to it until about 11-12 weeks. She only likes the MAM style, never cared for a soothie. If there is a next time, we will try much sooner though I know there is no guaruntee that will go differently. I think if you just keep trying in different scenarios (for us, the first time she really took it was on a car ride, after a variety of attempts) they may realize "hey, this helps me feel better!" and a light bulb will turn on. That was our experience anyway! Hope your baby comes around to it!

I am in the same boat. DD is 7.5 Wks now and she just won't take one/keep one in. We have tried many and it seems her favorite is the Natursutten brand, but she still can't hold it in for very long. It usually ends up pissing her off!

I didn't have luck until we tried MAM - the soothies just didn't have enough for him to grab onto! I would keep trying. In the beginning it was hard for him to keep it in his mouth. I don't know how many times a day I would put it back?? A million??

our midwife recommended going up a size. It encourages them to open wider for breastfeeding and stays in their mouth better.

My DS would not take any paci we tried, and we tried a bunch, always spit them back out or pushed them out if we held it for him. He wasn't a thumb sucker either. There were times he had medical appointments where I wished he would take it to soothe him but nope he just wasn't into sucking. :bummed:

My LO didn't hold in his pacifier for very long when he was sitting upright. He never tried to spit it out when laying on his back. It definitely seemed like he kept trying to play with it or something and it would fall out. There is a lot of holding it or putting it back in. It got better though as he's gotten older.

I could only get my little guy to suck on a paci if he was already pretty much asleep and a lot of the time I had to hold it in anyway. He did much better when sucking my pinky finger but he now has a tooth so that's not an option anymore! The pack he did take was just a really basic, non-orthodontic Tommee Tippee.

This might sound really dumb, but how do/did you get your LO to take a pacifier?

With LO1 - I was "anti-pacis" and so was she. She would spit them out, refuse, etc. We used the WubbaNub for travel (i.e. plane or car ride) when we needed her to calm down and be quiet, but always one of us holding it. She found her thumb eventually, and now at 2.5 I'm constantly trying to figure out how to break her of the habit.

Now LO2 - we were NOT anti-paci and tried introducing them as early as in the hospital. He has the habit of "snacking" and nursing every 1-1.5 hr now and I think a paci could help. DH can get him to use a pacifier, but mainly holds it in place. With me, usually he gags and/or pushes it out with his tongue or turns his head. When swaddled (another thing we're working on), he will take the pacifier, but it falls out almost immediately if I let go. IDK what's up? Someone said maybe my kids are lazy suckers (lol) and that's why they can't keep the pacifiers in on their own? LO2 is 4 weeks now. Should he be able to keep sucking on his own to sleep/soothe? Does it sound like I'm out of luck with pacis? It's looking like I'm going to have thumb-sucker #2 - he loves to suck on his fist when he can get them. But until then, am I SOL with the self-soothing? TIA!

* We've tried regular Soothies, WubbaNub, MAM, and Munchkin Latch. The only one he'll even keep in a few seconds is the MAM.
