I think the tawney is the most traditional, but I actually like the hazel color the best with the other colors you have in the room. Show us the final result once you decide and it gets done!

@Mamaof2: We recently got walnut hardwood very similar in colour to the Tawny but I now wish we'd gotten something more like the Hazel.

Ours show every speck of dust and fluff and its super annoying! DH really wanted the grey and I vetoed it - I wouldn't tell him now but that was actually the better choice!

@Mamaof2: That's a really good point! I did waver a lot between the two options and when we have water on the ground, I wish we had gone with vinyl.
I prefer the Tawny. I hope you will share "before and after" pics with us.

@crazydoglady: one reason I like the vinyl is due to the "feel" which will supposedly hide scratches better

@Mamaof2: Such a hard decision! We did our entire house last year in a high quality laminate and I must have looked at a thousand samples. I really liked the vinyl but couldn't get over the "feel" of it on my bare feet. My sister has bamboo and wishes she hadn't gotten it...so many dents etc. I gravitate toward the Tawny because it seems the most classic. Do they have it in store so you can open a pallet up? It would be interesting to see if the different planks have different variation, otherwise, I think the veining might be a bit much through an entire house. Next, I would vote the sepia by default. I want to like the the Hazel but it has a green/gray hue that is throwing me off. Then I would say the slate for reasons PP mentioned.

What color are your cabinets? I would pick something that goes well with that.

We have similar dark colored flooring (Sepia) but we have high ceilings with lots of windows. The dark colored floors help with all the sunlight that comes in. Another good thing is that it does mask the dirt a little bit.. Negative is that water/milk spills are pretty noticeable (I have a two year old boy who gets things everywhere)

Have you tried googling the brand/color? Sometimes you’ll get lucky and either a marketing or personal photo will pop up of a whole room which can give you at least an idea of what a big area will look like.

I agree it is really hard to pick on a small sample. Instead of trying to visualize the specific sample color on your whole floor, I would look at your current floors and try to imagine them being generally darker/lighter/etc... Once you decide which direction you want to go from your current color, then you can see which samples align with that.

Our floor store also had much bigger samples available - if you're able to narrow it down to 2 or 3, I would go back and ask if they have larger samples in your favorite colors.

(PS: I choose Tawney, then Hazel. I would avoid sepia and slate)

@Mamaof2: Continuous floors are the best. When we did ours we went from a mix of wood and vinyl to all wood everywhere and it's great. FWIW, we have something very similar to the tawny (also vinyl plank) in our basement, and it shows no dirt at all. I still vacuum down there, but it could probably go for a month and no one would know.

Also, just FYI our maple (light colored) shows ALL OF THE DIRT. It's manageable--we vaccuum ~once a week and sweep regularly--but something to know if things like that drive you crazy. Although it looks like you have light bamboo, so you probably know that already.

For something big, like flooring, I would stay away from anything trendy, which to me right now means no grey. You might love it now, but if you fall out of love with it you're stuck looking at the equivalent glass block until you're ready to do your floors again. And then from there it's more what you want the floor to do for the space. If you have a smaller space and you want to open it up, go for something light that will make your space feel airier and less closed in. We put maple in our main level and our narrow, dark hallway instantly felt bigger. A dark floor will ground the space, and is better for larger spaces with higher ceilings. Dark flooring was also a big trend recently, but has been going out of vogue, so if you're planning to sell in the nearish future it might not be the best choice.

Also, before we bought our floors the mom and pop shop we eventually bought from let us take a home a box each of two different floors. You can ask if that's an option. Or if you're buying from a big box buy one box and return it if you lay it out and don't like it.

It's amazing how different they look in different lights. I personally would stay away from the slate and sepia. I would think the sepia would show stuff a lot and I just don't like gray that much. I'd go for one of the middle two.
