I saw this website posted and wanted to share it here. There’s both books geared to children and adults, and so far I’ve found some really great ones. There are definitely suggestions you’ve seen before, but I was surprised with how many were new to me.

Thanks for posting and everyone for sharing, very helpful.

My kids are 2 and 5 months, and one thing I am doing at this point is to heavily emphasize diverse books. Many of them don't talk about racism, but I think it's useful for creating a sense of empathy and connection with a variety of people, even when you can't always do that IRL (i.e. because we've been shut up in our house for months...) I particularly like the barefoot book singalongs. My son loves the songs, and they feature a very diverse group of characters. The books are beautiful, but for all those who may not have extra money to spare for books at this point (and public libraries closed) there are videos of all these on youtube. Another favorite of my two year old is a book called "freedom soup", where the main protagonist is a Haitian-American grandmother who tells her granddaughter the story of how her people were slaves in Haiti who had to fight for their freedom.

Thanks to everyone for providing resources. Because my almost 7 year old was an only child for a long time, I have a tendency to share more and talk to him like a little adult, so I'm never sure whether I'm providing enough information or too much.
We're lucky that he goes to a very diverse school with a focus on social justice (e.g. instead of an annual winter holiday assembly, they have an annual big MLK Day assembly). In some ways this makes it easier to have these discussions but in another way it's harder because we're talking about a group of people that he's close to and feels integrated with (which I know makes it all that more important that he knows that his experiences in society are fundamentally different than his black friends). I grew up very nearby but went to schools with only a few black people so talking about racism and social justice didn't hit so close to home.

This has been on my mind all day. I actually just ordered this book: https://akidsbookabout.com/collections/all-products/products/a-kids-book-about-racism

We've always talked openly about what racism is, how it still happens, and what we can do. It's never been big conversations - just things that naturally come up. But I think it's time to be more deliberate with the conversations. Hoping the book is a good jumping off point.

@LadyDi: I don't think it matters what it looks like. The goal is to have lots of these conversations so none of them have to be the "perfect" talk. Some will go better than others, some will resonate, some won't. In my opinion it's better to start younger so then they actually understand less and you can "practice" your talks before it feels like they are judging you.

I don't know how your local library is, but we have found tons of great, conversation-starting books at ours. Right now, my four-year-old responds more to narrative books than straight-up biographies, and she loves fictionalized biographies where she can look at pictures of the real person in the back. The Youngest Marcher and Between Us and Abuela are the two we have at home right now that have inspired the most conversation.

Something Happened in Our Town is also great, but I haven't quite been ready to share it with my daughter yet (and incredibly privileged position, I know!).

For the record, we do read many inclusive books (with POC, persons with disabilities, females in male dominated jobs--I have three little truck enthusiasts! , what different families look like, etc) but I would like to specifically address racism (and sexism, etc) too. I don't know the exact "right" way to do it, but I am trying.

Strongly agree with the books. I love Ashia Ray at booksforlittles.com All she does is work on books we can read to tackle all kinds of injustice, but I extra like that she gives a lot of suggestions about how to talk with kids and adults.

I would say books like the ones @erinbaderin mentioned are a good start, and then at the end things like: Did you know that things like this still happen today? While a lot of our laws have changed, black people still aren't treated fairly.

And then we just constantly layer on that base. Today I have been very upset about what's happening in Minneapolis. My 7 year old picked up on that, and, honestly, I told her that a police officer killed a man. She asked why, and I was able to say: You know how we have talked about how black people in this country aren't always treated fairly? Well, that's what happened here. And it's our job to use our privelege (another digression here to reflect back on previous conversations) to stand up against that. Then we talked a little about what that might look like, but she wandered away.

We live in a small (6,000 people), rural, conservative, Christian, white (>95% according to the last census) community, so while it is difficult to expose my children to other races/ethnicities, I still want to raise them to be anti-racist. I'm finding some resources online, but most books, etc seem to be for older children (mine are 6 and under--which I know is NOT too young to be learning about racism).

Can anyone direct me or give me insight on actionable ways to teach my children about racism and how to combat it?
