@Cherrybee: are you on Instagram? I've found lots of good "post partum" workouts on IG, my favourites are pregnancyexercise.co.nz, The Movement Room, and MyTrainerCarmen (not specifically for postnatal women but she has some good videos), you could also check out The Bump Room on YouTube.

I am really obsessed with MommaStrong (mommastrong.com). She has several different programs for varying level of fitness. All are accessible for $2/month. She is very focused on healing diastis recti and functional fitness for moms. The workouts are great and her approach to life has really helped me beyond my fitness.

I've found that minimal (like 5 mins a day) ab exercises really help to keep things in. Just bicycle crunches, reverse crunches, leg lifts, planks. Oh and pushups too. I don't think you need to hit the gym hard to see some good results.

(PS I do none of this at the moment... maybe this will be my motivation to get back to it!)

I would definitely self check to see if you do have diastasis recti. This video shows you how (she finally gets to the check around 1:50) I definitely have a poochier/odd shaped belly after #2 and have a 2-3 finger separation right at my belly button. If you do have a separation, then traditional ab exercises, like crunches, will only make it worse. You need to do the exercises to heal your separation first.

I also recommend barre3. The core workouts target your transverse abs, which pull you in. I don't have 6 pack from it, but my stomach was flat. (Now 9w pp so I'm starting over)

@Cherrybee: you're welcome! Exercise is definitely different with kids around haha. Lately I put my son on the playmat and hope that batting at toys and gazing at his reflection will be entertaining enough for a quick workout :-) The site also has some set programs you can buy. I've bought a coupe because sometimes I just like someone to tell me what to do every day. And they're pretty cheap, under $15 I think for an eight week calendar.

I like bar style workouts. Bar Method and Barre3 are my favorites. They tone all over though, not just core. I recommend them if you don't like cardio and/or need something low impact (some people seem to love cardio but I hate it).

If you ever have another pregnancy, I highly recommend a binder in the first weeks/months post-partum. I used Belly Bandit but there are lots of different ones.

At 10 weeks postpartum I'm just getting back into regular exercise. I love fitnessblender.com. They have tons of free videos you can do at home. I think strength training is the best for tightening, at least for me. Those are my favorite videos

I've been doing Barre as well and I really like it. I also like the 21 Day Fix workouts. They're only about 30 minutes but it's tough and most of the exercises involve your core.

Barre helped close my Distaisis recti in about 2 months. There are a lot of barre exercises that focus on the core, and they are low impact so I was able to modify and still find myself modifying. I went 3 times a week the first month, and have been averaging 3-4x a week the second month.

@Cherrybee: Right now i do nothing because I am 2 weeks postpartum and my core is shot still. But I stink at at-home exercise unless it is running, so i was doing OrangeTheory Fitness, which is a chain here in the states. It's like working with a personal trainer but in a group setting. It was interval training with cardio, weights, and rowing.

ETA: lots of weights, planks, body weight resistance training, sprints, hill work (on treadmill), etc. Brutal, but that's what I liked.

@avivoca: I don't think so. My stomach muscles are non existent though - even when I was slim it was from not eating, I've not done any exercise for 20yrs! I was showing by 8 weeks in my first pregnancy and by 5 in my second because my stomach muscles were like jelly!

What kind of weight exercises do you do? Anything I can do at home?

If you do have diatasis recti, you can see a physical therapist who specializes in this issues to help close the separation. Google online about how to diagnose it. I do not have this issue but it's super common and can contribute to have a tummy even when someone's weight is fine.

Do you have diastasis recti? If your abs are separated, you can look several months pregnant because very little is holding your organs in. Also, for me, I did all the cardio and calorie counting and the only thing that made a difference was when I started lifting weights.

I've been overweight ever since I moved in with DH 7yrs ago, and tipped into the obese category between my pregnancies.

I didn't gain any weight when I was pregnant with S and I have lost 14lb and dropped two dress sizes since having her. But my tummy is still big - read: I look 5 months pregnant. It's like I'm losing weight everywhere except there.

I still have 10lb ish to lose until I'm happy with my weight, but I know that this will come off all over.... Is there any way to target the tum area? Any specific exercises I can do to shrink it down?
