@blackbird: Glad it worked for you! Sleep is seriously underrated, huh?! @cheert16: The post about how I did the angle/nest went up today. http://www.hellobee.com/2013/09/03/surviving-reflux-colds-angle-sleeping-and-crib-nests/

So @mrs blue's trick with the towel was AMAZING! I was able to incline the crib mattress and she snuggled her butt into the rolled up towel and slept pretty well last night! 850-130, then 2-4, then on and off until 6. At least, I feel pretty rested, ha. I also was able to put her in the bed around 810 and she managed to settle herself down with only one visit from DH and one from me to put the paci back in.

When a baby starts learning to roll onto her stomach, what's the next step? Do they learn how to roll back over on their back or learn to sleep on their tummy?

During the day, how would you recommend "practicing" this stuff? Assisted rolls from front to back?

@blackbird - J is doing the same but somehow doesn't wake herself up once she's sleeping for the night. Before she falls asleep, she needs help rolling back to her back.
I'm sending good vibes your way!

@crisark, I know! :). The boppy won't help--E is a rolling maching!

@googly-eyes, well she's going to the crib whether she likes it or not, lol! She's pulling herself out of the RnP already! Not safe! I literally walked in to find her sitting up in it and pulling on the fabric the other day. Ahh. And it's not separation anxiety b/c we moved the RnP to her room and she sleeps fine in there! That was my first guess, though.

I'd just wait it out a couple weeks and if not figure maybe she's just not ready for the crib? Also is the rnp in your room? Maybe it's a case of wanting mom and dad nearby? That wasn't an issue for us til separation anxiety but you never know..

@mrs. blue....hmmm definitely something to think about. If this keeps going on, the big guns will definitely be coming out :). How long did they cry before they just went to sleep? I guess I don't know how long is a reasonable amount of time to let her wail. It's not particularly hard on me to hear her crying when I know she's otherwise fine. Thanks!

Sure hope this isn't something horrible I'll be dealing with soon lol Getting 11 straight hours of sleep is so nice I want to be spoiled a little longer ;)

@blackbird: for CIO, in our ecperience, it takes at least a couple nights of doing CIO brfore you see signigicant progress. I would start on a weekend or sometime when you can risk little sleep for a night or two. We also did CIO for all wakes ups because I didn't want to confuse them by sometimes picking them up and sometimes letting them cry. But it fixed a multitude of sleep issues for us!

@mrs. blue, awesome. I never thought about putting a rolled up towel under her like that! And I'm glad you said CIO worked for you. I am not at all opposed to CIO, but I just didn't know if it could possibly work for this issue. Maybe i'll try that tonight and if she wakes up twice, i'll put her in the RnP after the second wake up.

@blackbird: When we transitioned from the RNP to the crib, we had to elevate one side of the crib for reflux issues. I rolled some blankets tightly and put them UNDER the sheet in a U shape to make a "nest." I actually have a blog post almost ready to go about how to make this work so they don't slide all over the bed. Anyway, I think the rolled blanket under the sheet mimicked the RNP feel a little bit since it was something they could suggle into and even work their bottoms down to the base of the nest and put their legs up over it. When we transitioned away from the nests, F did the leg kicking thing for a couple days, but when we did CIO with them, he started rubbing his sleep sack and would put himself to sleep that way. Also, when they started rolling to their tummies, they would wake up screaaming for the first couple nights, but when they finally got adjusted, they started sleeping much more soundly. Hopefully, LO will adjust in another couple of days.

I'm ordering the magic sleepsuit and we'll work on rolling front to back more. She definitely doesn't have it mastered like back to front rolling!

I hope this suit keeps her legs from going crazy, though! I'm hoping if we can tame the movement, she won't get up every hour, at least! When she's in her RnP, she sleeps really well

@blackbird: I know :( but this too shall pass! I agree with doing LOTS of practicing of the skill during the day..it helps them master it sooner. we also practiced the opposite skill even if she'd already 'mastered it' because i felt like she forgot - so rolling both ways, sitting up and then being able to get back into a laying position, pulling up but safely getting down (this was a doozy..she would stand and cry and cry because she didn't know what to do without falling and hitting her head!).

We went through this and honestly it was a waiting game until DD mastered the rolling skill. In the mean time I would go in there when she flipped over and was freaking. I would soothe her, flip her over and leave the room. Inevitably this would start the rolling and crying all over and we would repeat.... And repeat... And repeat until she finally passed out. During the day we would do lots of tummy time to encourage rolling practice. Hang in there... This too shall pass!

Oh, how tiring for you :(
Yes, we went through the exact same thing - and sadly the main advice I have is to wait it out... P has really struggled with every transition and we have had a rough time with night waking for a few weeks with every developmental stage. The advice I got from a sleep consultant was to help her practice her gross motor skills a LOT during the day, especially after bath / before bed, to tire her out and stop her brain from wanting to practice those skills during sleep... So we did try, I think it helped a bit. But the main thing was just time with a sad, tired baby in between. I hope E gets the hang of the crib a lot quicker!

we also went through this - not a RNP transition but just in general, a period of time where she couldn't quite get comfy. then there was the learning to roll period, and learning to sit..sigh.

I'm kind of in the camp of waiting it out. I'd go in, quietly fix her back to a good position and calm her down if I had to, and then leave. it was exhausting but stopped after a few days (per milestone!).

She'll be 5 months old next week.

She's swaddle weaned, too! So we are hesitant to put her back in the swaddle. And when the head of the crib was elevated, she rolled down it so many times, we took the books out from under it. She basically rolls, then manages to turn herself sideways by doing a pseudo army crawl in her crib. Girl wants to get a MOVE ON, that's for sure.

Oh the Magic Sleepsuit. I might need to do that. I feel like it's all her legs wiggling around and going bonkers banana apeshit.

Ugh. I was hoping this would be a one week issue. Not something we fought for a month. Even when you flip her back onto her back, she starts raising her legs up and wigging out.

DH said that when he placed a hand on her legs and on her chest, she got calmer. Maybe we do need to make her more immobile

eta: she's been rolling for months now!

How old is she?

Unfortunately, it might just be a case of waiting it out...my LO went through a phase where he would roll onto his stomach in his sleep and freak out--wake up screaming until we rolled him back to his bac. Repeat, 5x a night. It was awful. But it ended once he figured out how to sleep comfortably on his stomach and how to roll easily back to his back if that's where he wanted to be. It took about 2 weeks or so--it was a baaad 2 weeks, but then it got better.

Have you tried the Merlin Magic sleepsuit? I've heard that's very helpful for the transition to the crib.

We went through this. We transitioned out of the RnP, swaddle weaned, and dealt with learning to roll all at the same time. I'm not going to lie.... it sucked for a couple weeks. But then she figured it all out and just started rolling onto her tummy and staying there (and sleeping much better there!). So I'm not sure there is much you can do but wait it out. The one thing I would suggest is elevating the head of her crib mattress so she's at at bit of an incline like the RnP. But I wouldn't do this if she's still swaddled because if she's swaddled and gets herself perpendicular in the crib the incline could cause her to roll down to the bottom.

So E is doing *really awful* about sleeping in her crib. She was doing well for about 4 days and it has progressively gotten worse and worse. She now gets up every hour until we move her to the RnP. Then? Solid sleep.

Basically, she kicks her legs up a ton while she's sleeping, rolls over, ends up on her stomach, and then flips the heck out. She's only been able to roll from stomach to back a handful of times. She has no problem going back to stomach, though. When she kicks her legs up, though, we wonder if she's trying to mimic the feeling of the RnP where her legs are inclined. She just won't lay flat and basically does hip/leg thrusters until she flings herself over. Sometimes she can fall asleep on her stomach, face down, but inevitably she stirs a little and realizes she's stuck.

Any and all recommendations welcome! I don't even know that CIO would help this.
