I look at it this way: if you each got your own car, you and LO would need a little, economy-sized car ($) versus her likely needing an SUV ($$$). So you might be spending more by splitting a large car 50/50 than you would just renting a smaller vehicle on your own. I think it depends how much you're willing to spend and just money in general. If you and your wallet are okay with splitting the cost 50/50 then that'll be easier. But I think you would also be justified splitting it differently so it's balanced across their large family better. (Not to mention the gas someone else brought up... Then I'd probably split the cost of an economy car two ways, but ask her if she minded paying the cost to upgrade to a car large enough to hold everyone since her family is larger. </p> <p>But I'd hesitate to do that.
