I've been starting to wonder about this also! DS is 7 months, and I'd like to wean by 1 year. I also have a freezer stash. I currently pump just enough for DS for daycare the next day, but I have a feeling once I start dropping pumping sessions, my supply will decrease accordingly. I also get clogged ducts easily so I'm not sure how to approach it without getting clogged ducts that require emptying my boobs to remove....

My timeline was different, but I took the gradual weaning approach. I started cutting my pumping sessions at work. Went from 3x to 2x over the span of a couple of weeks, then slowly down to 1x to zero. Nursing sessions at home were hit or miss as far as following that timeline, but I also had a freezer stash I would use to try and stick to the gradual less pumping during the work week and not restart the cycle on the wknds.

We were completely done by 1 year and 3 days with nursing and after a couple of days of fullness, I've had no issues with pain/etc.

while my timeline was different, dropping pumping and nursing sessions definitely lessened my supply. the whole process took a few weeks (i dropped 1 or 2 a week, and then went cold turkey when i was down to 1 or 2 nursing sessions).

i supplemented with formula on and off during the first year--i usually mixed some formula into a breastmilk bottle. your LO may or may not have issues with transitioning to formula. so you could mix bm and formula to start, but you may be able to go straight to formula!

don't know if any of that was helpful, but good luck!

@daniellemybelle: great! I will find it. I haven't found too many threads about weaning around 6 mths which stinks, but I know I don't want to keep pumping at work past the end of May. I'm over pumping and figure once LO gets some taste of solids she will be over the moon with them. She may surprise me. I didn't really have any supply probs except for when I was sick, but who knows how it will go. Thanks for responding!

@singingbee: I posted a thread kind of about this - weaning at 6 months - and I only got one response but it was really helpful if you want to go find it! We will probably wean before LO can just go straight to cow's milk, and I think the best way to do it from what I've heard is to just switch out one nursing/pumping session for formula every week until you are down to just morning & night. I figure since I have supply issues at that point I will just naturally dry up & we will comfort nurse twice a day until LO is over it.

@QueensBee: thanks! Did you just start fixing bottles of formula in the same previous amount of breastmilk?

For the first five months, LO was a boob addict and I was quite nervous about weaning him. However, around 6-7 months, he began to enjoy the bottle equally, which was a surprise to me.
When it was time to wean, I dropped my mid-day pumping session first. I was able to nurse in the morning and at night for 2-3 weeks after that. There's a possibility that I could have continued to keep those sessions for longer than that (it was hard for me to tell if I was drying up), but we both seemed ready to move fully to the bottle.

I know that this isn't the case for everyone but I was also surprised that I never experienced engorgement. Although I was worried at first, the whole process took about three weeks and was fairly intuitive. LO took to formula right away and his digestive system didn't show any signs of distress with the transition.

I hope you also have a easy transition! GL!!!

LO will be 5 months on Saturday and while we are not ready to wean just yet, i need to start wrapping my head around it. I know I'm over analyzing it, but that's my personality so I'm looking for advice.

Right now I nurse in the mornings and evenings, but LO receives bottles at the sitter's and I pump at work. For several reasons, I want to be able to stop pumping at work middle of April, if I can. If not, I'll go to the end of our school year, which is the end of May.

Did your supply drop when you stopped pumping? How did you start introducing formula, which I'm not against? Just make it for the same amount that LO drank of bm? She has had some formula before, but not since Christmas. I have a freezer stash, which I'm hoping I can use when I stop pumping to give her some bm until she is one in October.

This is long and probably all over the place, but I'm bored tonight since DH had to leave early due to the weather and we have no school tomorrow and I figured while not start thinking about the future.
