@SweetCaroline: Oh yay! That's exciting! Good luck! I hope you like her, if you had a good feeling then hopefully that bodes well.... I hear you, I dread it every week TBH, and cry a lot which is frustrating to me, but I feel good after and feel like it's definitely good to tackle instead of just burying.

@hellobeeboston: Hi!! My first appointment is today. I'm equally dreading it and looking forward to it. I am so appreciative of your advice. I pray this is a good fit. I went with a working mom in hopes that would help.

@SweetCaroline: Hey --- did you ever find someone and get started? I must say, as hard as therapy is, i feel really good about doing it and wish I had started much sooner... anyway, I hope you found someone you like.

I'm sorry you're having a tough time. I had to start video therapy sessions last spring because of the pandemic too. Finding a therapist is daunting.

What worked for me is asking a friend who seems happy with her therapist her therapist's name. I called her asking if she's taking new patients and she wasn't, but she mentioned her husband was. I reached out to him and that's how I found my therapist.

Just wanted to suggest something I've heard of but haven't used personally: Talkspace. I believe it's all online!

And I can really relate to the conspiracy theory rabbit hole. My relationship with my mom is all but gone. We've reduced it to strictly nonpolitical things, which is very hard because of my career. Knowing how she feels about what I do for a living crushes me, especially because her feelings aren't based in fact.

My advice would be for you to set hard boundaries with your friend. The next time he/she sends something you don't like, respond back and say, "Thanks for sharing, but these topics stress me out and I'm trying to nurture positive vibes right now. Please help me by not sharing things like this in the future." Or something like that. The point is, you're going to have to dictate the safe space you need for the relationship, and if your friend won't respect that—actually embrace it, because it's for the mental health of you, her friend—then that tells you all you need to know, as painful as it is. <3

Just wanted to add that I looked up local providers through my health insurance portal and some had some info already posted. I identified a few that looked like they might fit my needs and then looked them up online as well. I went regularly for a few months before the pandemic and then let it drop. It might help to see which providers are doing in person and virtual visits at the moment.

And I’m so sorry about the family member. We are dealing with this also and it’s so hard.

@hellobeeboston: @caitcat: @Mrs. Carrot: Thank you all. I found 5 options on Psychology Today and sent my first email.

I second the Psychology Today rec for starting. It might take a few tries to find someone that you click with, but that's very important, so I recommend doing a couple conversations and trusting your instincts for whether you feel a vibe with someone.

I hear you on the parent issue, I've been in a similar boat with my mom and brother this year, and honestly the only advice I have is to set boundaries, though I know that's super hard. I've blocked them on Facebook (we're still "friends" but they can't see my posts nor can I see theirs unless I actively look for them). I've reduced our conversations to primarily her talking with my daughter, and when she and I talk, which is less than typical, I shut down any political/conspiracy theory stuff very quick and shift to neutral topics.

All the best to you! <3

I found a child/family therapist just by googling therapy options in my area...that helped me identify a few practices that I liked the looks of. I went to an overview/intake sort of session at one of them, and they matched me/my daughter with someone who they thought would be a good fit. I was looking for a combo of play therapy for her and some more parenting-oriented therapy for me. My best friend found her therapist starting with a search on Psychology Today. I haven't poked around there much, but it seemed to be a great starting point for her and is probably where I'd start again if I were looking just for me.

Also, I'm so sorry your mom has gone down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole. My in laws are in it deep right now, and it's devastating all around. We get so many links from them about truly crazy stuff all the time, and it's so hard. They're totally consumed, so even when I think we're talking about something benign, they bring conversations back to some really out there stuff. I worry about them, I worry about how to maintain our relationship with them, their relationship with our kids as a result...oh it's a mess.

@SweetCaroline: i'm sorry that is happening with a close friend - that would be super hard to deal with, and I'm not sure how I would handle it.

I just started therapy - actually couples therapy, but I took charge of the process and we are doing some individual as well.

I started looking on Psychology Today. I also wanted a Psychologist or a Psychiatrist instead of a social worker, so you can sort that way.... You can see what their profiles say, and then see if they have a website of their own. I probably spent a couple of hours researching. Then I reached out to about 5 or 6 different therapists. A few didn't have bandwith to take on new patients, and I spoke to a couple on the phone.

I really liked what I heard on the phone with one of them, and I liked her approach and she felt like the right fit to me, like someone I could trust.... So far she's been great.

Good luck. I hope you find someone

11 months into the pandemic...it's getting hard to muster up positivity and optimism.

My tipping point is a parent that is full on conspiracy theory. I get links to articles and videos all the time. It's crazy and I'm upset that one of my last support systems is essentially gone.

So...tell me how to start therapy. What credentials do I look for, etc.? I know we have something through our EAP. To be honest, the only reason I've avoided in the past is that it sounds like a lot of work and I've got enough of that already.

Bonus points if you have resources for dealing with family that have fallen down the rabbit hole.

Thank you, I know that I am far from alone in this and appreciate your thoughts.
