@.twist.: I know what you mean... for me, around the time I started following EASY, I also started working on a schedule for J, which helped me see his tiredness cues more clearly. Figuring out J's optimal waketime (I never really thought of it like that though, rather just knowing when his next nap was supposed to be), combined with watching him and seeing how/if his behavior changed around that time, was helpful for me. So for example if he looked tired when he just woke up, I would just assume that's him waking up from his last nap, but if he was supposed to nap again at 12:30 and he was starting to yawn or get fussy around 12:15, I'd get him ready for his nap then.

@Beehive: the part about putting down at the first sign of tiredness still confuses me. My little dude will yawn after a nap, so I know he isn't tired, but that's one of the cues? I haven't figured his cues out I guess...

@Foodnerd81: Gah, then I'm not sure what will help... you're doing everything "right" (as if there is such a thing). I did have to rock LO to sleep with his pacifier in to get him to sleep for naps, though (and re-rock and shush when he would wake up after 30-45 minutes).

@Beehive: yup, already swaddle. There's no chance if her sleeping more than ten minutes without. White noise, swaddle, and room darkening curtains. I'm considering putting the RnP in the bathroom bc there is no window and its pitch black.

I think I started the EASY routine a little earlier, but what really helped with LO's naps was swaddling for naps. I'm not sure if you already do that, but I was swaddling for sleep and not for naps, and when I added the swaddle for naps, that made a big difference. The swaddle combined with the pacifier, rocking/shushing LO while he was in the crib and swaddled, dark room + white noise, and making sure to put him down at the first sign of tiredness, tended to work pretty well.

@JoJoGirl: yeah it's true? Just breaking the nursing sleeping connection is a good first step I guess.

At 10 weeks we were still rocking and bouncing to sleep. We tended to do EASY in the sense that I tried not to nurse her to sleep, but still bounced and rocked until she was maybe 4 months old. Then I started just putting her down awake at night and letting her fuss and figure it out. She cries (still) when she goes to bed but never for longer than 20 mins. For naps we're still rocking and bouncing! Nap training will come later, I guess.

@Foodnerd81: I STILL don't really know Xander's sleep cues (and he's 7 months)! He used to just be playing on his activity mat one minute and then passed out the next! Though it definitely made him easy because he could just fall asleep on his own without help. But yeah, just keep working it and I think you'll eventually figure it out with her!! Good luck!! <3

@Adira: is just the getting her to sleep that's so hard. But I'm hoping and praying that if we have a good nights sleep tonight and I'm super vigilant for tired cues tomorrow we can do it.

I don't have a ton of advice because we started EASY around 3 weeks and I think starting it so early helped. I would say just try to go for it - when she wakes up for the day, immediately nurse her - if she seems to get sleepy from nursing or falls asleep, wake her up. I used to do diaper changes AFTER nursing to wake Xander back up since he was used to falling asleep on the boob.

BUT Xander was good about falling asleep on his own, so I don't really have any advice on what to do if you're used to nursing to sleep and your baby has trouble falling asleep on their own. I would try rocking, patting, shushing - I followed some of the tips from the Baby Whisperer book and they definitely helped, but I can't guarantee it'll work for you!

Then if she does fall asleep, regardless of how long she sleeps for, nurse when she wakes up and start the whole EASY routine again!

@brady80: she is actually just starting to take a paci for a short period of time and taking comfort in it. But not long enough to fall asleep. And yeah she's still to young for any kind of CIO but I'm just trying to get her to nap at all! The book doesn't advocate leaving her to cry I'm just a little confused about what to do.

@Foodnerd81: sorry you're going through this. I have no words of wisdom, as my DD is 3 months and we don't really have the whole sleep thing down. Does she take a pacifier? I've noticed sometimes when she wakes up it's bc her pacifier is out and if I put it back in she goes right to sleep, no rocking needed. My ped doesn't recommend sleep training until 6 months (ugh). I've also read that a half hour is considered a nap, so if you can get a few of those in, you're golden! Good luck.

@.twist.: hugs right back. The only time she seems to fall asleep is when she is nursing, but as soon as she pulls off, she's awake!

If you used to nurse or rock to sleep and you started using the EASY thing, how did you make the transition? C is 10 weeks tomorrow and her sleep is just getting worse and worse. She's always had a hard time napping but now even her night stretches are getting shorter, and she is just impossible to get to sleep. Today she took one hour long nap. We spent combined hours trying to get her to sleep throughout the day but it is just not happening. Obviously at this point we have a crazy overtired baby.

So I'm going to try the Baby Whisperer method but I know it will be a rough transition. How did you do it? When she's crying in the crib do you keep picking up and putting back down? Or just patting and shushing? I read the book cover to cover but her picture is a little rosier than what I know i will be dealing with. She seems to be a "touchy" baby, fwiw.

We can't go on like we are. Everyone is miserable. We can't even rock or nurse her to sleep most of the time now. Nights are better but not great. During the day I'd be willing to hold her for a whole nap but she won't even stay asleep that way.
