So, I think there are three main things that are really important, one is maintaining and expanding your network, the other is continuing ed or certification in your new field and the third is maintaining a "work" schedule by either volunteering or something part time.

For the network, now with social media, make sure your online presence is complete and up to date. Search for people in your area that have the position you're looking for and contact them...people love to talk about how they got where they did and with the internet, it's a lot easier than ever. I'd also hook up with some agencies and offer your services, even if they are clerical in nature just to get your foot in the door and make more contacts. Think stuffing envelopes in off hours for an agency you'd like to work for.

I feel as though there is always demand for people that show that they can be adaptable and work hard, so if you show that you're committed to learning the ropes and possibly taking a step back to enter.

Good luck!

I read one of your responses- I would get into volunteering. Even one day a week, something casual. If I had stayed out longer I planned to volunteer at a domestic/sexual violence shelter. I was going to offer to run a support group for them. they usually provide childcare for attendees, so my daughter could have hung out there.
Maybe you could mentor?

I'm going back- just got a job and my daughter is 1, I will be starting when she is 16 months.

I maintained contact with one really, really great contact. he is a professor in my field, and also works with the same population I do. I "guest lectured" twice for him (just came in to speak to a class), and participated in a couple other things. Basically I just asked if he wanted help with anything, and did some really casual stuff for him.

I also did a ton of online trainings for CEUs, which puts me a lot closer to a certification I need.

I have a masters in social work, and work in substance abuse treatment for non-profits.

I think you could totally spin that and I'm sure there are PLENTY of opportunities to network and get involved with that demographic. They're always in need of an extra hand!

@blackbird: Good tips! Thanks! When I was teaching, I taught (mostly) underprivileged kids with emotional and behavioral issues. I'd still like to work with a similar population, I just don't want to deal with the bureaucracies of teaching.

If you're changing careers, do you know what you think you'll want to do? Maybe you can pick up a small certification or do some volunteering in the area?

I think it's especially difficult to change your trajectory after staying home. It's not like you're going BACK to something, you're starting fresh. So you need some new skills! Maybe head up a group or do some volunteering and NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK. Non-profits do a lot of evening events....I'd start with those!

I took 2 years off following the birth of my son. I went back to work a year ago. I have a meeting, will be back later for more detail.

I would like to go back to work when B is 2 or 3. However, I'm worried that no one will want to hire me after I've been out of work so long. I know I can keep up with my credits, but I don't think I want to go back to teaching. I'm leaning more towards looking into the non-profit sector.

In the meantime, what can I do to stay marketable? Are there any other SAHMs who went back to work after the first few years?
