Maybe you need to take him to the bathroom more often? Set a timer so you don't forget.

Having my kids help in the cleanup process made a difference in my house. They are expected to help wipe/scrub the floor and help carry things to the laundry. It reduces the 'extra work for me' and helps make amends without losing my temper.

I recently read the book 'how to talk so kids will listen and how to listen so kids will talk'. I'm no fount of patience, but it really helped me be more thoughtful in how I respond to my kids. It focuses on empathy & problem solving, and even some silliness to cope. Even at 2, my kids are responding well and I'm staying calmer most days. But I'm sure you don't have an excess of time to read a book right now :)

My kids took probably 6 weeks or so before they really asked to use the potty unprompted. But before then, we just all made bathroom visits on regular intervals (before/after meals, leaving home, etc). Can you make it a habit to go to the potty before you leave him alone?

@lawbee11: I already told DH that I will need a vodka or wine IV when we have to potty train R. I know it will be a battle.

@Mrs. Yoyo: The easiest way I found to keep my sanity was to throw the underwear away.

I found I got so aggravated trying to clean poopy underwear that I put a lot of that frustration back on her. The accident is done/over/it happened, but I would keep the frustration since I had to clean it up.

I was much more calm with accidents when I just said "whatever" and threw the poopy underwear away.

No advice cause we're not there yet, but I'd be super frustrated, too. Vodka? :silly:

No real tips but I can commiserate - DD1 has chosen to start peeing in the potty this week (her idea not mine) which is awesome, except that somehow she always has to pee when she's in the middle of dinner and I'm trying to feed her six week old sister at the same time :And she likes to do about 3 drops at a time before she wants to dump the potty, flush the toilet, and sit again. And again and again! So each potty trip takes a good 20 mins. eek! And yes, she definitely wants an audience...and needs to be watched to make sure her toys aren't also "using" the toilet and ending up soaked in pee. Oh the joys of my baby becoming a big girl....seeing how pleased she is with herself helps me be a little more patient though

@Mrs. Yoyo: Yeah, I would ask her if she needed to go and 2 minutes later....I made stinky poopoo in undies! AHHHHH! She was finally poop trained 2 months after we started.

I still lose my patience because she takes forever to poop on the potty and she wants an audience! I need some wine too!

@autumnlove: snacks? I think I need wine.

The thing is he does it deliberately whenever I have to leave him. I get that this is something a lot of kids do, so I know I need to change my reaction, but in the moment all I can think is UGH you KNOW better!!!!

It is hard because accidents always happen in the worst moments!

I always told my LO it was ok and next time please tell me when you need to go, etc. I ate snacks after cleanup time. :P

Any tips? Lately I'm so quick to get frustrated with DS1 (just turned 3). I know some of it is lack of sleep because of the baby, and some is miscellaneous personal stuff, but seriously I get so annoyed with him so easily.

This morning he insisted on wearing some underwear his aunt sent him. Of course I told him he needed to tell me when he needed to pee or poop. The morning passes without incident and one successful pee on the potty, but of course the moment I left him to put baby down for his nap he peed all over his floor and took an enormous crap in the undies. I was SO PEEVED. And I know you aren't supposed to shame them or anything, but argh, I seriously couldn't help myself.

Arrrrrrgh helllllp.
