I was going to say your machine might actually be eating them - I had a friend whose machine stopped working and they found a lot of socks in some hose - but others have beaten me to it! I try to pair mine up before washing, I find it helps.

@HappyBaker: It depends on what kind of washer you have. On our top loader (I forget the brand), it was located inside the agitator. On our Samsung front loader, it is located behind a little door in the bottom corner. Your manual should state filter information.

Apparently I am the only mom alive who doesn't know this sock bag trick! Thanks everyone!

@Iced Tea: Umm...where is this filter? I've cleaned out a drain thing before but it was just a tube of water!

When we cleaned the washing machine filter (which I previously didn't even know existed!), we found several socks of all sizes. It can definitely eat socks.

@HappyBaker: My washing machine has actually eaten socks. A mesh lingerie bag will be your BFF.

I do the mesh bag and go one step further to safety pin them together. No more matching required. They come off the feet, get pinned and go in the bag

Mesh lingerie bag for socks and I do it for myself and my husband too!
I do my sons in a mesh bag. And then for my husband and I we each use one for our socks so that when I fold all of his are together and all of mine are together and I don't have to sort them from a big pile. Life changing!

Pull back the rubber ring that seals the washer door. We found a ton of molding baby socks in there when that seal tore and we had to replace it!! We use a mesh bag now too!

@Jennibenni: this. Even the little bra size ones are good for a week's worth of baby socks.

We have an odd socks box in our laundry room. After a load of laundry the odd ones go in the box and every month or so I pull it out and match them up.

I try really hard to get multiples of the exact same ones so we don't have fifty different types- but for some absurd reason multi packs are almost always variety packs! I did this for my husband and I and ii try to at least get a handful of each set for my daughter and it really helps.

@Jennibenni: Holy moly, that is genius! I've never used a lingerie bag for anything but this is this best idea ever. Thank you wise sock-washer! :-)

Get a mesh lingerie wash bag. Keep it in/next to your hamper and put all socks in the bag as soon as they come off feet. Zip bag when you're putting it in the wash, then when it comes out of the dryer all socks are in the bag and just have to be matched!

Baby / kid socks are the BANE of my existence. We have like 1,000 pairs but never can find any that match. I tried to solve the problem by buying 10 pairs for each kid of just white socks, but we managed to lose or misplace those in less than 3 months! I swear my washer/dryer must be eating them!

Anyone have a magical solution for actually having clean kid socks that match? :-)
