I just swaddle weaned my 2.5 month old because of the impending warm weather (we don't have central AC) and because he likes to sleep with his arms up. It was rough the first few nights, but now he STTN again! Took about a week. We use the Halo swaddle and just wrap the swaddle around his middle. The one arm out didn't seem to make a difference for us, but I've heard that it does for lots of babies. I guess it just varies when the baby can successfully swaddle wean. I hope you have as good of luck as I have, when you do decide it's time to wean :)

We did cold turkey at 4.5 months, after having experimented with letting one arm out and then the other. But she really wasn't sleeping as long.

Then my father in law bought us this magic merlin suit which she loves! I think it helps muffle her movement. We plan to wean her off this next week now that she's 6 mo starting with naps, but it's been a godsend!

It's surprisingly breathable- you'd think she'd boil in there but we actually have to put her in long sleeved pjs or she's cold.

Good luck!

3 months might be a bit early to quit swaddling (of course it completely depends on the baby, but we stopped swaddling LO at 4 months exactly, when he rolled onto his tummy while swaddled). We quit cold turkey and it worked well, but his startling reflex was pretty much gone, which might not have been the case if we had swaddle weaned earlier.

If she's sleeping well swaddled, and she's not rolling yet, I would seriously reconsider swaddle weaning. Sleep is precious! Babies survive in very warm temperatures all over the world!

We did it cold turkey but I agree with just using a thinner blanket, like a Muslin blanket.

@Muffin: why not get a thinner blanket or material of whatever you're using to swaddle?

Yeah I am thinking I will just have to go cold turkey, and give up being selfish and my nights of sleep for the next few weeks to give it a go

honestly, LO decided cold turkey. she had a cold and i tried to swaddle her and she flipped out. there went the swaddle. it was a rough 1-2 weeks adjusting to her arms out but she did ok!

We tried weaning around 3 months and it didn't go well, so we returned to swaddling. Closer to 4 months we started doing 1 arm out, then 2 arms out. Now she STTN with both arms free, but still with the halo sleep sack swaddle wrapped around her midsection.

@Weagle: I just get worried she would get too hot, even in just a diaper. So I figured now is just as a good time as ever to wean her from the swaddle.

I'm curious as to why the weather makes you want to stop. We swaddled straight through last summer with no problem. If it was especially warm we would just swaddle her in her diaper, though that was only necessary when. We lost power due to storms.

We quit the swaddle cold turkey. We've found slow adjustments just make LO angry. She figured out cold turkey changes much more quickly.

My baby girl is almost 3 months and in order for her to sleep through the night or take decent naps i have to swaddler her, tight. If I don't do it tight enough she pulls her arms out and wakes herself. But with the warmer months on the horizon I am going to have to break her of this. What did you ladies do? I thought about going looser and looser, then start leaving an arm out, and slowly transition her. Or should I just cold turkey and she will learn? Do I let her just cry when she realizes she is in her crib, usually if I lay her down without a swaddler its only minutes until those big eyes pop open!

My routine now is diaper, bottle, let her belly rest, swaddle, and put her to almost asleep then I put her in her crib with one of those toys that attach to the crib and move and play music. In the warmer months I placed another blanket over her to help hold her in and keep her warm.
