@Foodnerd81: Toddler are nuts. Yesterday D broke down in full on tears because I broke off a piece of his waffle for him. Apparently broken waffles don't taste the same *rolls eyes*.

@ShootingStar: the other day C picked up her cereal bowl and poured the milk into her lap to see what would happen. Then threw a full on tantrum because she had milk all over her lap.

DS is 2.5 and I have no interest in giving him an open cup yet. Occasionally we let him drink from a water bottle, when there's no other option. He just doesn't have the presence of mind to not knock it over or dump some out just to see what happens. #sippies4life

Thanks all--this is helpful to know it's normal and how long it will last--oy! We currently do most of the things you suggest (take away the open cup when she spills) but lately she refuses to drink out of the straw/360 cup at mealtimes in favor of the open cup so I thought I'd see what other options I have. Doesn't make sense but toddlers just don't make sense in general, right?

@Foodnerd81: hahaha my newly two year old also thinks that her open cup (when she gets one, which isn't often) is great for dipping things in....doesn't matter what the beverage or food is, the girl loves to dunk. It's so gross.

I'm pretty late on giving her open cups for this reason. Now, at 2 3/4, I give her an open cup of water at meals but only fill it up an inch and refill as needed. If she spills on purpose or sticks food or her fingers in it (gross) it gets taken away. She has straw cups that she can drink from otherwise.

DS was like that. We'd give him an open cup but if he started pouring I'd tell him, "I gave that to you for drinking, not spilling" and take the cup away. He'd get it back at the next meal. He was super into pouring too so we tried to do lots of pouring practice to get it out of his system.

@Mrs. Pajamas: My older LO will be 3 in July and I still rarely give her an open cup for this reason (and she's been able to drink from an open cup for ages).

But...if you realllly want an open cup--just give tiny shot glass sized cups so your LO can't spill much.

The 360 cup? I think it's asking s lot to expect an 18 month old not to spill their water from an open cup. When we give open cups, I only put a small amount in in case it spills.

I like @LBee: 's idea. I think part of being ready to drink from the cup is the maturity not to dump it purposefully, not just the ability to drink from it. If you revoke the privilege when LO dumps the cup, maybe the behavior will stop?

If not, Avent makes a sippy that is flat (you drink from the rim around the edge, but it can't be spilled).

My 18 month old is really great about drinking out of cups but she also really enjoy spilling water all over her high chair/herself and it makes me insane! Is there any way to stop her from doing this while still allowing her to practice with a cup? We have sippy cups but that kind of defeats the purpose, right?
