@BadgerMom: our LOs are almost exactly the same age! Maybe they're going through a growth spurt?! Yeah my guy is 5% weight too! 8 oz bottles is impressive!

We haven't really had a problem until recently either. He'll be 5 months on the 27th. He's been going to daycare (and taking the huge bottles for a month and a half now), but this weekend was the first time it's been obvious that he wasn't getting enough from the boob. He's also a little guy (weight wise at least). 5% weight, 85% height.

@Mrs.Someone: thanks! that article was pretty helpful. I think all 3 of his caregivers (me, my mom, and hubby) tend to give the bottle differently! This article will help us all do it the same way....

@BadgerMom: sorry you're dealing with this too! how old is your LO? he was doing fine up until last week or so. Then again, he's always been really small according to the doc, so maybe he's always been hungry??? though he didn't act it???

@nana87: thanks! i am curious. i'll have to look it up on youtube!

@twodoghouse: thanks for sharing! you're a superwoman- nursing twins!! awesome.

I've supplemented from very early on, but this is what I do now at 5.5 months with my twins. For DS I nurse first, then offer a bottle. My DD prefers nursing so I give her a bottle, then nurse her. If I nurse first then offer bottle she won't take the bottle and she is still on the small size so she needs as many calories as possible. The size depends on when they ate last, how long they nursed and what time of day it is. For example, in the morning my supply is better (I think this is true for many people) so I give 2 oz bottles. If they take a really long nap and it's been longer since they ate, I nurse then offer a 4 oz bottle. Right before bed we sometimes give 6 oz depending on if I think they need more ounces for the day. We are dealing with reflux, especially in DS so I err on the side of smaller bottles more frequently. I am someone, though, who supplements heavily due to low supply (and nursing twins) so my plan might be overkill for someone who has been able to EBF the last few months. But just sharing my experience!

My LC wrote a good article about how to give a baby a bottle: http://www.second9months.com/bottle-feeding-your-baby-sets-the-pace/

Though my LO is much younger, when he wasn't getting enough out of the breast (not strong enough), I was told to offer each side for 15mins at the most, then a bottle with as much as he wants. We filled it with 2oz, then eventually with just 1oz when I wasn't able to pump enough to meet the bigger bottles.

Supplementing is not my favorite! I always offer my boobs first, then supplement with a bottle, either of pumped milk or formula. The amount depends on how much she wants-- usually I start w 2 oz and then offer an oz at a time after until she pushes it away. I always "pace" the bottle feedigs (there are YouTube videos that show how) so that she doesn't get the milk too fast/prefer the bottle, though I do think she had a bottle/flow preference :( she nurses no problem motn and in the morning but sometimes she pulls away in the afternoon but whines until she gets a bottle

I'm right there with ya. LO nurses great first thing in the AM and before bed, but the other nursing sessions are short and distracted. He takes two giant 8oz bottles at daycare and I know he can't be getting that much from me. On Sunday he was super cranky and finally I realized he was just hungry, and he wasn't getting enough from me.

Sorry to not be any help, but I can commiserate.

My LO is 5 months old. We've finally had success with him taking a bottle, and have found a formula he seems to like. I think my supply is not meeting his demand, so we decided to start supplementing with formula after each nursing session.

How do I start this? Should I have 2 oz of formula ready, and see how easily he takes it? Or should I have more ready? I'm guessing the answer is that I just have to experiment with the amounts.....

And is this the "right" way to start supplementing- nurse first, then give bottle? Oh, and since we found a formula/bottle he likes, sometimes he's really fussy when nursing. :( I keep him on the slow-flow nipples so the formula doesn't come out too fast, but maybe he's still impatient while nursing? Sorry if these questions seem basic, but this is all pretty new to me!
