@mrsjazz: @yoursilverlining: Oh, good, glad that was a helpful recommendation!

Here's another article about discussing mass shootings: http://www.today.com/parents/how-talk-children-about-shootings-age-age-guide-t59626

I like how it says for children under 6, to give a "one sentence story." Sometimes I think we want to over-explain.

LO is too young for all of this but I have had a hard enough time answering questions about death - ugh. This is a tough part of the job.

@mrsjazz: Re: mass shootings/terrorism, a NYT columnist that lives in France wrote a great article on how to talk to children about terrorism:
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/17/opinion/is-it-normal-to-have-two-terrorist-attacks.html

The article mentions that a lot of kids process trauma by making art... it reminded me of some other articles that talk about how to encourage that!

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/arts-and-health/200907/helping-children-draw-out-their-traumas

https://www.mercycorps.org/helping-children-through-crisis-tips-parents-and-caregivers

After 9/11, there were a lot of articles about kids drawing as part of their recovery... it was a really effective part of their recovery. My kids are really into drawing, so when things happen in their lives we always encourage them to express their feelings in their art - it's amazing how powerful it is.

@mrsjazz: thank you for this thread - my husband and I were just talking last night about how to talk to our daughter about mass shootings, since they happen multiple times a week and show no signs of stopping. She's asked some questions and it's clearly something we need to figure out how to address, sadly. :bummed:

@daniellemybelle: Glad someone had a book recommendation on talking about gender/transgender. I have a cousin who has just "come out" as transgender/is transitioning, and I was wondering how to approach this topic with LO as well.

@jedeve: Thanks for reminding me of this. The episode is from season 2 and it's called A Storm in the Neighborhood.

@mrsjazz: There is a book that is a good metaphor for the experience of being transgender even though that's not what it is (explicitly) about: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Crayons-Story-Michael-Hall/dp/0062252070

I know there is a recent Daniel Tiger episode about this. I haven't seen it, but it's based on the Mr. Rodgers quote on looking for the helpers.

@lamariniere: thanks. I wonder if any of those have been translated. There might be something I can find online about the Newtown shooting.

When the Paris attacks happened, a couple of French newspapers ran articles with advice from psychologists about how to talk to kids about it. I'm summarizing here, but they said to tell the truth. Keep it simple. Let them know it's ok to be sad or afraid. And don't show them images/videos.

I'd love to gather resources that provide guidance on how to talk to children in an age appropriate manner about tough subjects and current events.

I am looking for resources on:
terrorism (international and domestic)
mass shootings
climate change
explaining what being transgender means
race
death

That's all I can think of right now but I'm sure there are more. My daughter is 3.5 and she's asked about race, death, and mass shootings and I want to talk to her about it but am struggling with the how part.
