I would let it happen naturally. Lo started to show signs she was ready to transition to 2 naps around 8 months. She normally falls asleep within 10 minutes or less after laying her down in her crib, but I noticed she would crawl around, stand up, and play and not fall asleep- she'd waste up to 45 minutes doing this when she should've been sleeping. And after she finally fell asleep, she'd only nap for 30 minutes when she normally naps an hour or hour and half, so I knew something was wrong. So after seeing her do this (watching baby monitor) for a few days, I decided it was time to transition from 3 naps to 2 and to keep her up longer in between naps. I loosely followed 2-3-4 schedule until her naps become established and her new schedule came about. She will be 12 months in 2 weeks and we're still on our 2 nap schedule, I hope she stays on a 2 nap schedule for as long as possible!

I found the 2-3 nap transition the hardest for us. My son was a notorious 30-45min napper. It wasn't until I sleep trained at 8 months (night and nap at the same time) and stopped helping him to sleep did his naps lengthen and he dropped that last nap. I started by the clock schedule too at this time. It was rough, but was what finally worked for us.

Both my kids started extending their nap length right around 7 months and dropped the third nap. I roughly followed the 2-3-4 sleep schedule (google if you haven't heard about it) although theirs was more like 2-3-3. I had stopped nursing to sleep though by 7 months with my daughter because I had to go back to work and my son found his thumb around that time and uses it for comfort to go to sleep. DS is 14 months now and his schedule is:
7am wake up
9-11am nap
2-4pm nap
7pm bed

Good luck!

I am interested to see the feedback!

Hi everyone,

My LO just turned 7mo and is on 3 naps a day (usually anywhere between 30-45mins but usually 30ish min). He doesn’t have set times for naps yet. I go by his cues. Usually the first nap is 90mins after wake up, then every two to two and a half hours after that. I’ve been noticing lately he’s been pushing to the 2.5hr wake time mark. Last nap is usually done by 3:30 and then bedtime at 730.

Today, he woke up at 730am and and fell asleep around 915 and slept until almost 1130. I tried something different today. When he woke up after 30minutes, I tried to nursing him back to sleep to see if he would sleep longer and he did. Do I just need to keep doing this to get longer naps? And should I start pushing him to a 2 nap schedule or let it happen naturally? What times would work best? (9-11? 2-330?). I was surprised he slept so long this morning for his first nap. Also I’m not ready to ST for naps yet bc I don’t mind nursing to sleep for naps right now. My only issue with it is he’s becoming mobile and won’t sleep when I transfer him to his crib for naps so I side lie nurse on my bed. I’m going to have to figure something out that’s more safe.

Sorry for the long post. TIA!
