@BeachMama: I got lucky in that LO was ready to be done with bottles. The other baby in her nanny share is a bit older and has been off of bottles for a few months and they both like to have the same things. We just offered her the straw cup with milk and she took it, but she's been drinking from a straw cup since she was about 6.5 months.

@Honeybee: My pediatrician said I could try to start weaning LO from the bottle at 1 but many kids take longer and up to 2 was fine.

I started sending straw cups with formula or breastmilk to daycare at 11.5 months. She got the hang of it after a couple of days! I stopped all daytime bottles at 12 months and retired the night bottle at 13 months.

@BeachMama: LO takes 4 bottles (AM, before his nap, around 3, and before bed) equaling 22 oz or so a day. He won't take any fluids from his sippy cup but will happily use regular cup. Unfortunately, he looks like he's competing in a wet t-shirt contest when he uses a regular cup. He will also use bottle caps as cups and scoop up his bath water as a beverage. Silly kid!

LO is 15 months and is just now starting to take milk consistently from a straw sippy cup. I think I was trying to do too much in a short space of time - new house, new baby sister, no bottles. One of those had to give so it was the no bottles! We're doing much better now. Let your LO guide you in this :)

@BeachMama: our pediatrician recommended that DS drink 12-16 ounces of whole milk a day, but DS is nowhere near that. I'd say he's normally in the 6-8 ounces range; however, he does eat a lot of cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products. I only offer sippies of milk at meals and before bedtime, so that might be part of why he doesn't drink much.

@Honeybee - so how much milk does your LO take now during the day? I read that they're supposed to take less and less milk because they're eating more food.

@Keiki_Mama - yeah, DD will drink water or juice from a sippy but has always pushed milk/formula away. Guess I just need to keep trying every few days?

@keiki_mama: When DD turned 1 year, our pediatrician told us we needed to fully end the bottle as close to 12 months as possible. This winter we moved and DS's new pediatrician was totally surprised we had already bottle weaned him. The pediatrician said they don't discuss bottle weaning until 15 month wellness checkup and they recommend being totally off the bottle by 18 months. So I guess it's nothing to worry about if your LO still takes a bottle after 12 months!

I'm struggling with this too. LO is 13 months and doesn't like sippy cups or straw cups. When we try to offer milk in cups he shakes his head and pushes it away. We've been trying for weeks now! I asked his pediatrician and she said he might not be ready to make the switch? I'm out of ideas.

I just reduced the amount of the bottle by a couple ounces every week. It took a little longer (about a month) but DS slowly learned to drink more from his sippy during the daytime and less from his bottles.

It means replacing a bottle with a sippy cup. At 13 mths I haven't done it yet, but LO uses a sippy for water.

LO is turning 1 at the end of the month and I'm starting to think about weaning her from the bottle (she's 100% formula fed now). She typically gets 4 bottles during the day, and a small one before bed.

How did you wean from the bottle?

When I look at website they say to eliminate one bottle feeding every few days. Does that mean to replace the bottle feeding with milk in a sippy cup? Or just eliminate the milk altogether? So confused :-/
