@Peasinapod: So maybe try to stretch out the time between nursing sessions as a first step if you don't want to immediately go to morning/night only? Like maybe if she eats at 7, no more milk until 11 and get out and do something fun, offers snacks and water and see how that goes? It might be a way to step it down gradually. Good luck!

@MamaCate: she has never really had a schedule and she loves snacking. In general she doesn't go longer than two hours before wanting a nursing snack.

@MrsSRS: haha, I like the oh look an elephant suggestion. She gets very upset once she decides she wants to nurse and almost nothing will distract her. However I don't think she thinks of it until she sees me.

@danda: unfortunately I have never introduced a bottle or soother since she was never interested and I was always home to nurse on demand. Regretting this now. She does like water in a straw cup though.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I Didn't anticipate how tough this would be! And I can tell with her personality (boob addicted) it's going to be tougher the longer I wait. I do plan to keep morning and bedtime a bit longer but hoping she'll be able to understand those are the only times we'll be nursing.

We worked on offering food and sippy cups of cow's milk. Does she ever take bottles? That's the easiest to sub (she wouldn't take cow's milk at first so we would add maybe 25% cows milk /75% breast milk and increase cow's milk percentage over a week or two so it was only cow's milk).

I agree with @MrsSRS that you should pick one or two nursing sessions you want to keep, and nursing is off limits any other time. For us, the last session was in the morning and we nursed in my bed. That was the only time and place we nursed and I told her no the rest of the time. We had some tantrums but we just had to do lots of distractions. My LO was older too so she did understand that we traded nursing for a special cup of juice, snuggle and song. Not sure if you even will need that with a 12 month old - you could just hardcore distract.

Maybe pick times you want to keep longest, morning and bedtime or whatever, then put in clothes that make for difficult access and head out for something distracting like the zoo. Keep lots of her favorite snacks and drinks on hand. Then when she wants to nurse you can say no nursing, here's your cup, oh look an elephant! This is going to sound strange, but I found at that age that physical movement helps them get over being mentally stuck on something. So if she's pulling at you and whining instead of saying no and staying where you are, try saying no then swooping her up and moving her to a new space or activity.

@Peasinapod: does she have a rough schedule when not teething? It might help to start with one time of day (lunchtime?) or try to stretch the times between feeds? I day weaned my LO at 13 months but she had been on bottles at daycare.

Things that helped were having lots of distraction (let's go play) and other food. I usually nursed her in the glider in her room so I made sure to avoid that.

Maybe you could focus on day weaning first and keep the morning and evening feeds at first? Good luck!

My lo will be 12 months in a little over two weeks. I can't beleive its gone by so fast.

We've had a great nursing relationship, but I would like to wean her in the next month for my return to work. I see suggestions to cut out one feeding at a time, but I don't have specifically scheduled feedings- just nurse whenever she asks, which with teething this past month (just gotten her first two teeth at 11 months) has been constantly.

So how do I cut back? She's also very insistent when I try to say no. Will whine pull at my shirt and eventually be in full blown tears...
