I just started trying without it at a few feedings, and if she couldn't get latched on I'd put it back on. Eventually I got to only using it at night, because it was easier, and then I stopped using it then too. Hang in there, you'll get it!

I did exactly the same as @Trailmix. I would start with it on and take it off during the feed.

@Ash: We used the nipple shield exclusively until 4 months. I never had supply issues and it allowed me to EBF my daughter when I otherwise likely wouldn't have been able to. It was a bit of a hassle to constantly wash it but I really didn't worry over trying to force her to wean off of it because it worked for us. Then one day when she was four months old she popped off, ripped the shield off and tossed it, latched right back on, and never looked back. Still nursing her at almost 13 months.

Hang in there. He'll get it eventually. Just keep trying. And remember the older he gets the better he'll latch on. He's probably still trying to figure out this whole latching on thing. You're doing great already!

@Ash: I wouldn't worry too much about the amount of time, he might be getting more or eating more efficiently without the shield. If he's still hungry, he'll let you know :) I think the latching without the shield is the hardest part of the switch so you're doing great! I only would put the shield back on if mine couldn't latch on and were screaming. It takes a few days for babies to adjust so just keep at it!

@Trailmix: @grizz: I can get ds to latch after a few attempts but he doesn't stay on nearly as long as with the shield. Did you end up using it if this happened?

I did what @Trailmix: did. My supply really increased when we weaned off of it and I was getting adequate stimulation at each nursing session

I did it by starting with the shield and then taking it off after a minute or two, plus trying some straight up without it. Took about three or four days of trying at every feed to finally get off them but it made nursing so much easier without them!

I used a shield exclusively for three months.

I just kept offering without the shield, and basically shoving my nipple in her mouth.

Eventually she just figured it out. It took a week or so of me offering without it. I was amazed, because I thought I would never nurse without the shield.

I think at three months she was old enough to realize "mom is trying to feed me right now."

LO and I went to an IBCLC today to try and make some progress getting off this stupid nipple shield! I originally started using it because my nipples were so scabbed and painful. Every time I try to get him to latch without it, he latches right to the tip of the nipple (OW).

We were successful in getting some good latches out of him, but now that I'm home, he's back to his old shallow latch. I had to eventually pull out the shield so he could actually eat, because I kept having to pull him off. Thank goodness they have me a sample of APNO, because I'm hurting this afternoon :(

Did anyone have success weaning from a shield? How long did it take? Did you quit cold turkey or alternate feeds with shield and without shield? Looking for any tips because I'd love to ditch this thing (and get him to latch better!).
