@MrsTiz: I definitely didn't mean to be discouraging! It's totally doable, but I just wanted to give you a realistic idea of what having a newborn is like for most people! It's a big adjustment. If I had to go back to work in an office with her, I could have, but it would take some time to find a good balance. I think the advice to get a sling/carrier & swing for the office are great tips. You can find swings pretty cheap on NBD. Sadie could sleep through a phone ringing, but a headset is a good idea just in case.

i think it depends on the baby. Pierson is really laid back so taking him to your work enviorment would of been fine except for the ringing of the phone, my lo wouldnt be able to sleep.

@MrsTiz: Do you have a wireless headset? It could be set so that it doesn't ring loudly and wake a sleeping baby.

@MrsTiz: can you take things to work with you like a swing and a bouncy seat? At 7 weeks, M was going through a growth spurt and wanted to be held a lot. She was soothed with a pacifier and her swing or the bouncy seat (with vibration) if she wasn't being held. I would have to bounce the seat with my foot, though. I was lucky, from reading these stories, our baby was not that bad. She would fuss here and there but most of the time she was content if I was holding her or if she was in something that moved - chair, swing or on me.

I would suggest in investing in a good carrier - like an Ergo. Even though she gets hot in it, M loved it from a very early age. She would fall asleep in it if we started moving. You could take an exercise ball to work with you, put the baby in the ergo and I bet the baby would be content, snuggled up next to you.

You will need time when you're not answering the phones to deal with a crying baby but at that age, M mostly just cried when hungry, had a dirty diaper or just wanted to be held.

Anna turned 8 weeks yesterday and I won't lie the past two weeks were rough.
She went through some changes and she wasn't consistent at all from day to day. One day she would nap soundly for 3 plus hours in the afternoon on her own and then the next day I was lucky to put her down for 10min long enough to pee alone.
Her preferences have changed a lot as well. She doesn't like the bouncer as much as she use to, she likes the swing more when she's sleepy, she enjoys laying on her back in the pack n play just kicking her feet...her feeding is finally consistent now at 5oz every 3 to 4 hours.
I went back to work the day she turned 6weeks and it wasn't easy for those that had her during the day.
I don't want to make you think it's not possible but it's not going to be as easy as the baby sleeping nicely while you work unless it's time to eat. At 7 weeks that's just not how they are anymore. At least none of my 3 daughters were that way at that age.

as you've seen from people's responses, it depends a lot on the baby, your work situation, etc. if you financially have to go to work (and i can totally understand being reluctant to send a 6-week old to daycare), then i agree with the suggestions to find a good baby carrier that you like and can sit down comfortably in. at that age, LO's sleep issues were popping up and i was going haywire, but it may have been different if i had just resorted to using a carrier all the time for naps. i've also heard that a lot of newborns sleep well in rock n plays--maybe you could bring one into work?

you can always try it, and if it doesn't work, as your MIL to help out.

@HLK208: Yep! I could nurse at work no problem. If I don't bring him DH's office will become my pump room anyway! I basically anwser phones and direct the calls where they need to go, no one ever calls to talk to me so I'm not worried about being on the phone as much as I am the phone ringing just as a baby falls asleep!
@LaineysMom: I was hoping to get a million comments like yours haha :)

@Arden: You are a freaking rockstar! I would be in tears myself over a 3000 mile road trip, let alone with a little baby. I'm impressed!

@T.H.O.U.: That is great to hear because I am worried about it at 12 weeks because it's still so young, but I don't have another choice so that is reassuring!

@regberadaisy: My sister volunteered her Mondays and I know MIL would watch him whenever I needed, I would prefer him not spend a crazy amount of time there. I think what I might try and work out is working 1/2 days in the office with my sister/MIL watching him and then depending on if my boss would be okay with it maybe working from home the other 1/2 of the day, or split the week between the two. Hm. Food for thought~

@MrsTiz: DD was SO EASY the first 3 months. She slept most of the time and when she was up she would just chill while someone held her or in her swing. She LOVED her swing! I definitely could have brought her to work during that time. Hopefully you get lucky!

My advice is to get a good baby carrier and wear baby a lot! DD slept in that thing so much (beco Gemini) while I was taking care of my 3 year old at the time. I think it's doable if you have an easy baby. For me, if I needed to make a phone call - I would nurse her. Is that possible at work? Good luck, @MrsTiz:!!!

Take the baby! Your situation sounds great. Honestly, it isn't that hard. I just took my 8-9 week old on a 3000 mile road trip to a work conference where I stayed in a hotel for a week and attended meetings and worked a booth with her. I even spoke on stage in front of 1000 people with her in the sling, and breast fed her all the time with no one even realizing it.

You can do this. Just wear your baby, breast feed on demand, and have a positive attitude. Ask for help when you need it, but don't just assume it will be a nightmare. It doesn't have to be.

Sadie is 16 weeks, and I'm just recently able to get work done at home with her. The first couple of months were definitely an adjustment for us. Sadie is the easiest baby I've ever met, but newborns are very time consuming. In the beginning I could barely manage to take care of her and get the laundry done in one day. I've worked out a groove, where I can manage to get editing, housework, and playtime in during the day... but it definitely took time to get here. I would have lost it if I had to work with her at 7 weeks!

LO was (and is) a super easy baby, doesn't cry, naps easily, etc. I worked from home when she was 7 weeks to 14 weeks and it was soooooooo hard. I'd get good naps from her and get a bunch done, but then she'd want to eat for 40 minutes straight and then again 1.5 hours later. I only worked part time there's no way I could have done it al the office full time.

I didn't read all the posts above but could you get set up at home at least to take calls and be on the computer? That would be easier, I think. At 7 weeks my son required a ton of rocking to go to sleep and was a super light sleeper, and needed dark. He was never one of those sleep anywhere type of kids, unfortunately.

My newborn was colicky and at 7 weeks we had just gotten her straightened out on nights/days (she was basically nocturnal when born). It wasn't a pretty time!!!

To be completely honest; there is absolutely NO point in the past year that I could have brought my LO to work with me and been able to produce anywhere close to quality work. I work from home now, but she still goes to daycare 3 days a week for that reason. I think it would be super stressful too, at least it would have been for me.

@regberadaisy: I do work for family! :) I would use DH's office (no windows and a locking door), 95% of my job is on a computer so I would just work in there, probably let my mom take over phones for a few weeks and go to the printer less often. All that would be no problem, my job is the opposite of demanding...the only thing I am worried about is noise. Both from LO and outside noises waking him up or bothering him

I don't think it's a good to plan on having this work out. You just don't know what your baby is going to be like until they arrive. My daughter was a relatively easy baby, but I still could not get work done while I was taking care of her. She wasn't a big napper, and she required constant motion to nap. I was on maternity leave until 12 weeks, but I had to write a couple of proposals for work during that time. The first proposal ended up not getting written. The second one took weeks to prepare with me working every moment that DD finally managed to nap. If I had someone to watch that baby during that time, I would have gotten the thing written in a fraction of that time.

My 7 week old was very easy - I definitely could have taken her to work with me. If you could wear him, that would probably help keep him happy. Also, he could nap in the carseat and you could rock him with your foot? Oh, and I'm sure you'd probably have a handful of people that would want to hold him and play with him, giving you some additional time to get work done :)

I mean, at 12w, they need to be played with all the time and they coo alot, and they want to try and sit and listen to music...so eventually, it will have to end.

She wouldn't nap unless we held her to sleep and would wake up when we put her down. Oh wait, that is still the case at 12 weeks :)

But at 7 weeks, she was still iffy on the bouncy seat or activity mat, unless she could see us. She did the best in the newborn lounger next to us on the couch.

There was no way I could have taken her to work. But little Miss R is high maintenance.

Mine pretty much wanted to be held and/or nursing all of the time, but every baby is different.
