I reckon it might be a personality thing. My DS has sat and listened intently to endless stories since before 1 - and you can tell he is listening hard because a lot of them he can pretty much "read" to me by now! Whereas other things like crafts etc. he has a very short attention span and will declare he is finished after about 5 mins.

DS1 is 3.5 and listens really well. He'll sit forever and we can read chapter books. He loves reading!

DS2 is 13 months and just smacks the pages and tries to turn the pages back. He doesn't listen well, yet : )

Both kids sit and listen very well when we read together. LO has a better understanding of the stories, while LO2 enjoys the pictures more.

DD1 (3.5 yrs old) will sit and listen to stories for hours, and has always been like that, even as a baby! I started proper reading time with her around two months old and she would lay on the floor with me for 45 minutes at a time as I read stories to her. She's always had a massive love affair with books (just like her mama!) We read quite long stories now and I'm thinking of moving on to some chapter books for her pretty soon. Her comprehension is really good and she only needs to hear a book a couple of times before she actually knows the story and can tell us in her own words what is happening in that book. She also loves 'reading' new books on her own - looking at the pictures, telling a story of her own devising as she goes along.

DD2 (23 months) is getting better with books but used to only sit through a page or two at a time before closing it and requesting a new book. She really only will sit through an entire story with me though - anyone else and she loses interest after a minute or two, but with me, she'll sit and listen to the whole story about 3/4s of the time. We still read shorter stories to her (Llama Llama books, the How Do Dinosaurs.... series, board books etc) but she hears a lot of other stories from me reading to DD1 all the time. I figure listening in the background whilst actively playing is better than nothing at all! :-)

My 6mo loves being read to, and will sit through multiple books. I'm curious to see when that stops.

when i was reading your post, a thought popped up that maybe you could try a more "complicated" book to see if that grabs your older LO's attention, maybe your younger LO might catch on. i mention this because our daycare teacher told us that our LO really liked the frog & toad books--he just turned 3 so i feel like those books are a little more heavy on words than the picture books we have been used to, but he seems to be able to listen to them.

or, in the alternative, a real straight up picture book that doesn't really involve too much of a narrative but has tons of things to look at? for a while our LO couldn't stop looking at the richard scarry books, like cars and trucks and things that go, and what do people do all day.

you've probably covered these bases, but throwing them out there just in case!

ETA: for the longest time LO wouldn't sit still for a book. we just kept reading even if he was wandering around the room.

@Bao: I usually just read out loud while they play. But I make it a point to say "it's story time!". They started out completely ignoring me (or so I thought) but DS started to repeat things from the books of read so I knew he was listening. Now, they'll half play and half pay attention. Especially if I ask questions or have them point something out about the book. It's getting better. But my goodness, I couldn't take DS to a storytime at a library for a LONG time because he wouldn't sit still. Haha. I'm just going to keep trying at home. :)

My LOs, especially my DS (5), are really good at sitting still and listening to stories. We have one bigger book that takes literally an hour to read, and he will sit through the whole thing with full attention. He has been like this since before he turned 1 though. My 2yo will sit through a few stories, maybe 20 minutes or so, but sometimes loses interest and goes off to do something else.

When reading to your LO, how well do they actually sit still and listen to the story?

I don't think my kids sit still very well and listen to stories as well as they should, more so my 3.5 year old since she's older. I'm not sure if it's because I am trying to read to both of them and they are just overly excited but they are all over the place and only half listening. The stories are usually pretty short too (board books or early readers) so it's not an attention span thing, I don't think. I usually end up cutting it short because I'm eventually trying to read over them, and that gets old.

Is there a way to get them to both sit and listen to at least one short story, or is that asking too much with their ages?
