Birthdays are a huge deal in my family until you hit high school - we had 2 parties every year.

One was family only - grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

One was friends - it was usually a sleep over or a skating party. I think the most I had was like 15 girls or so.

I had a big party at home the year I was in 1st grade. All the girls from my class were invited. It was Pinterest worthy. I think my mom felt bad for mr because my two front teeth had just been knocked out. My mom says that wasn't as big as my 2nd or 3rd birthday party but I don't remember that one at all. I had some other slumber parties with 2-3 friends but that was normal weekend activity with cake & candles. We had no family in the area so the other years it was just the four of us which was fine too.

They varied but mostly home parties with a few friends, sleepovers when I was older. One year my mom went all out and sewed princess capes and made crowns. One year was at a the gymnastics place where I took lessons. In high school it was usually a couple friends and I went to the movies and dinner.

The other one was at church and I thought it was so cool b/c we had a big space and all these built in cool toys!

I only had "friend" birthday parties up until I was 7. I had issues where my cousin did not get along with my friends and everyone just fought. That was the last straw for my parents and after that I didn't have any. What's sad is that my cousin continued to have parties for her birthday, and she stopped inviting me to them. I think my aunt thought that I wasn't inviting her to mine... but in reality, I just wasn't having parties anymore.

I did continue to have family parties up until I turned 13 when half my family came late (3+ hours late!), and my grandmother told my mom that the reason was they thought I was too old for parties.

Yeah, birthday parties just didn't go well for me at all. I hope to make that different for my kids!

We had small family ones every year. When I was in 3rd or 4th grade I started having slumber parties for my bday.

I honestly don't get the point in having elaborate birthday parties for kiddos. Maybe 1 or 2 fancier birthday parties throughout their childhood, but anything more than that is over the top imo.

I find it especially odd that 1 year Olds are having such elaborate parties.....it seems more like a party for the parents.

When I was young, say under 8, we had parties at my house and I had maybe 10-12 friends there? After that I invited maybe 4-5 close friends and my parents would take us swimming, ice skating, bowling etc. then out for a meal. The trend these days around here, for school aged kids seems to be to invite the whole class (20-30 kids) and have it at a venue with catering, entertainment etc. Not sure if I want to go down that route for LO!

We didn't get celebrate my birthday much as a kid because it always fell on Fall Break. And everyone goes on vaca then. But on the off chance Fall Break didn't happen on my birthday, we'd do food and cake at the house then go bowling or something like that.

I don't remember many birthday parties, I think they were mostly at home with just my small immediate family? I remember a few occasions doing something bigger, but it definitely wasn't every year or very elaborate!

I only had two real birthday parties. One was in the first grade and I invited all the girls from my class over. And then the other one was when I was 16 and I invited a few of my friends over. They definitely weren't huge things.

As a kid, I think it was usually just home parties with 10-15 kids. Maybe at Chuck-E-Cheese or something at least 1x?

As I got older, I wasn't into having parties and just did things with 1-2 good friends. I think the fact that my bday is near a major holiday and people are out on vacation was/is a factor, too.

My parties were split. Some were at home, some years we had it at a special kids location (Like Chuck e Cheese). There was never elaborate pinterest-worthy set ups or anything. That wasn't my mom's thing. I don't think any particular party was very expensive. I usually had maybe 10 friends there.

@regberadaisy: I agree - I LOVE celebrating their birthdays and plan to do it until they move out - balloons, streamers, and a big sign are all put up the night before so they can be celebrated the moment the wake up!

same! small and at home. my mom always made the cake and goodie bags. I feel like we did a craft or had a sleepover party, too.
But I also lived in the 'burbs in a bigger house with a yard.
We live in a small city townhouse with no room for a party (or parking!). And my son is a December baby in the Northeast, so we can't do anything outdoors either.

I remember two birthday parties growing up. Once when I was like 7? It was just birthday cake and my cousins. Then my sweet sixteen in our basement with take out Chinese food. We were POOR! I think that's why I want to make sure each and every one of our children's birthdays are very special. It doesn't always mean a big expensive lavish party. But it will always be special till they no longer want to celebrate with us. (Waaaah)

Seems like today people spends LOTS of $$ on their LO"s birthday.

How were your parties growing up? Did you have them? Were they more/less/ the same elaborate as your kids?

Growing up we had home parties and usually invited 4-5 friends - I am similar with my kids although DS had his 1st "away" party at a bowling alley at age 6 - before that parties were at home and we have never invited the whole class - we keep things small
