Currency arbitrage?

Kidding! But I think something as simple as having a savings account and teaching kids about financial instruments should be part of the plan.

I agree that I think it happens organically. I didn't have an after school job or allowance to learn about money, but somehow I did. I think my mom talked to me about how much things cost to teach me about value. She also showed me things like the magic of compounding/growing your money which made me interested in saving--back in the day when interest was 5-10%, it was easy to see your money grow in the bank.

I am not an expert but I am pretty sure this kind of just happens organically if you set a good example of being financially responsible and working hard (aka not being lazy). My parents never did anything to "teach us the value of a dollar" (like pay us for chores, make us buy our clothes with our own money, etc.), but they just set a good example and lived with integrity and I don't feel like any of us grew up entitled, careless, or financially illiterate.

I haven't quite figured this one out yet. I'm inclined to say that chores should just be a basic responsibility, and the kids won't get paid for doing them. But I haven't quite worked out how the kids are going to earn their money so that they can learn how to budget and save. Growing up, I had a paper route from when I was pretty young but that doesn't really work since nobody gets the paper anymore. Plus we live in the city.

I'm not opposed to setting up an allowance, but I also don't love the idea of free money. But I don't have much experience with allowances, so I'm open to the idea if it teaches kids how to budget and save.
