@looch: I consider myself an independent too, but did register as a dem for this past primary/caucus to support Bernie Sanders. I wish more people would register & run as independents & maybe we could break the pendulum swinging & binary choices people believe they are forced to make between R vs D. We lose sight of the real issues/solutions when there is partisan politics driving it all.

I don't think that Republicans do not care about the sick/old/poor/disabled...I think it's more that they believe in small government, which limits programs that benefit those groups. I believe (and someone please correct me here) Republicans think that this is better left up to the states to handle, rather than at the federal level.

eta: I am a registered independent, which sometimes hurts me for voting in primaries, but the main issue I have is that I don't identify with either party. I am a moderate, and I venture to guess that a lot of people are the same.

@Truth Bombs: I see what you're saying, but it IS hard to believe that Republicans DO care about poor and sick people when they continue to vote for officials who make policy decisions that negatively affect the poor and the sick. I'm sure plenty of Republicans DO care about the poor and sick, but it feels like for the majority of Republicans, other things are just MORE important to them.

@Adira: You're right, my comment should have said a large portion of Republicans don't support THIS replacement option. I'm not opposed to replacement in general as I believe ACA definitely has room for improvement. Certainly for me personally coverage has become worse and more expensive than it was prior to ACA. So I don't see the 80% number as upsetting as you do. But from this post and others like your comment that "Republicans don't care about poor people or the sick, so... " it's clear you're dead set on just making this partisan fight rather than an actual discussion, which, coincidentally is the same way many elected officials feel, and part of why we can never get anywhere.

@Truth Bombs: You said: "Most people, including a large portion of Republicans, don't support Repeal and Replace." I wouldn't consider 26% of Republicans to be a large portion. Also, 61% of Republicans said they were more likely to support their elected officials if they voted FOR the GOP replacement and 46% said they were less likely to support their elected official if they voted AGAINST the GOP replacement. 80% of Republicans said they think Trump & the GOP should continue working on a plan to repeal and place the ACA. It seems pretty clear that the majority of Republicans are against Obamacare and for a replacement, including THIS replacement.

@Adira: Right so if 56% of Republicans hold a favorable view of replacement options and way fewer democrats hold a favorable view, then the majority of total constituents hold an unfavorable view and any elected official voting for these replacement options isn't representing the majority of his constituents. Thinking there should be changes to the ACA, and thinking these are the RIGHT changes aren't the same thing so that 74% number doesn't hold a lot of water for me.

@Truth Bombs: @littlebug: I agree that the biggest issue here is with elected officials, but I think they've found themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place because they've spent so many years shitting on the ACA that they just want something to replace it with so they can call it a "win." Another issue is a lack of diversity in drafting these bills. We've got rooms full of men drafting bills to defund Planned Parenthood, discuss whether maternity care should be covered as an essential health benefit, etc. It doesn't seem right at all.

@looch: "I really think we're solving the wrong problem in all of this. The answer isn't in fixing the insurance, the answer is in fixing the cost. Same applies in student loans. We need to address the cost of the education, not the loans." YESSSS!!! The root of the problem is the outrageous costs being charged for medical care. If we get costs of medical care under control, medical insurance won't be so expensive.

@Truth Bombs: I agree that the bigger issue is with our elected officials. But I also work with a lot of Republicans and they are definitely the people I'm thinking of when I read that article. I have one coworker who is convinced that poor people are just lazy and refuse to work. And another who believes that the people who would be kicked off health care because of these plans are doing so because they choose to. And another who thinks that things like Medicare are horrible because doctors aren't getting paid nearly enough for their services.

@Truth Bombs: I completely agree with your point about our elected officials being far more interested in a political win than in doing what is right for his/her constituents. And that is what pisses me off more than anything. They are elected to serve US not their party. I also read that many members of the House voted for the AHCA without reading it and that makes me sick to my stomach.

They've stopped doing town halls because they don't like being yelled at. They've stopped answering calls. One of my Senators, Pat Toomey, is like a ghost. Half the time when I call, the numbers just flat out don't work. They are spineless, heartless, and have no morality or empathy. I'm disgusted by the entire process at this point. Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan - I want to punch them in their smug faces. THEY are the true problem with this administration, not Trump. Trump is a distraction, a decoy.

@sunny: I think that's true, yes, as we age, our premiums will increase. Also, as employers are paying less and less, shifting the financial burden to those that are insured, that increases premiums. And general uncertainty in the markets! I think that's the a big, hidden factor that no one is talking about.

My main concern, though, is that if federal funding to Medicaid is cut and that burden is shifted to the states, many states will not be able to support those programs. People will go back to using hospitals as primary care physicians and that cost burden will be passed on to the consumers.

I really think we're solving the wrong problem in all of this. The answer isn't in fixing the insurance, the answer is in fixing the cost. Same applies in student loans. We need to address the cost of the education, not the loans.

@Adira: @lawbee11: I'm curious though who exactly this woman is talking to. Most people, including a large portion of Republicans, don't support Repeal and Replace. I think this line of rhetoric just serves to force a bigger divide and more antagonism among the general public. The truth is the bigger issue is with our elected officials who are more concerned with getting a political "win" and protecting those who donate heavily to their campaigns than taking care of their constituents needs and wants. I would venture to say that of the people who do support Repeal and replace, many don't actually understand the implications of that. While I wish the general public were smart enough to understand these things, that will never happen, but our elected officials certainly should be. Members of congress flat out admitted they hadn't read the whole bill before voting in favor of it. That's insanity.

My DD & I've been on the ACA since I left my job to SAHP, as my DH's plans are even more expensive if he were to add us. We are paying $500/mo for a $7k/person deductible plan (the only plan we could afford), and it increases each year. I believe I heard the carrier we have now is leaving the exchange in 2018. I'm seeing projections that my premiums may decrease slightly, but I fully expect it would include significantly less coverage. I'm banking on them removing the essential health benefits, including pregnancy, so this is one big reason as an AMA mama that I just don't think we can afford to have a 2nd baby. Like, just giving birth. We can't afford to pay $10k+ to give birth--God forbid something goes wrong. I'm also very concerned for family members on Medicare with addiction/mental health benefits. The cutbacks in Medicare could literally cost a life in my immediate family. :crying:

@lilyofthewest: yeah this exactly. My patient population is primarily Medicaid.

I have a federal employee plan, so, I think most changes to my costs and covered services would be minimal. The big change that I would expect to see would be copays/coinsurances/deductibles again for preventative care visits and paying for contraception again. I think most insurance companies have seen a good return on investment covering contraceptives fully, so I hope it wouldn't go back to the way things were pre-ACA, but, I wouldn't expect it to stay free/no cost-sharing.

We live in California, so I'm hoping it won't have an affect on us. However, I've got probably 3 prexisting conditions that I can think of all related to being a woman...one of those being currently pregnant. I'm terrified. I basically can't ever be without a job now because my husband is a small business owner.

@alphagam84: As someone who works in healthcare and deals with insurances on a daily basis, I can almost guarantee you that your employer-sponsored group coverage would be effected. Maybe not right away, but private insurances tend to follow suit with Medicare/Medicaid regulations. We see it all the time. Medicare changes a regulation, and a few months later, so does Aetna/Blue Cross/etc. So as Medicare and Medicaid drop coverage, raise rates, change reimbursements, so will your private insurance.

This legislation would essentially mean I will never be able to quit my job to spend more time with my kids/family because my husband is a small business owner and employer provided health insurance through my job is the only way we have to access health insurance. The cost of premiums on the marketplace in our state has more than tripled in the past 3 years, which I blame entirely on our state not expanding Medicaid. I feel they completely sabotaged the marketplace by inundating it with those who would have been on Medicaid otherwise. So disappointing, if all states would have expanded Medicaid, I think we would be looking at an entirely different scenario here. I also support a single payer system.

I think we wouldn't be affected since we have group coverage through our jobs. Most of the cuts affect those on the individual market. The hospital visits, etc. aren't covered 100% under the current plans and are pretty pricey co-pays until you hit your deductible so I doubt those are considered "essential services" like well checks, etc.

@Mrs. Pickle: @Adira: I've been using the 5 Calls app. It actually gives you a script for when you call. So I just call and read the script. Although this morning I may have gone off on a tangent about mental health care.

I am expecting that healthcare would increase for everyone. The pre existing conditions would probably affect my family some, but not significantly. These things are so complex and I do not know if they are right or wrong. My mom was under obamacare and she ended up dropping it because she didn't have access to decent hospitals, compared to other individual market plans, to treat her cancer and premiums were expensive.

From what I know of the bills and at this point in our life, I wouldn't expect any immediate changes for our family. This is our last pregnancy (luckily just under the wire) and we plan for DH to get a vasectomy afterwards, so birth control costs shouldn't be a factor anymore.

I know that it would definitely affect my extended family though, and I also worry about my family history of cancer and other illnesses! I guess I just feel less secure overall with the proposed changes and I hate that they will affect others even more so than me.
