There were several things my LO did at daycare before he did them at home. It happens. What I have learned from all my interactions with daycare teachers and directors is that they expect and are prepared for questions from parents. Just ask what happened.

As others have said, definitely possible that he did it on his own, maybe something about the different environment stimulated him, but if you are at all concerned I also don't think it's a big deal to ask to see the camera footage. I was talking to a relative who works in a daycare center, and she says it is not uncommon for parents to ask to see footage...

@Jennibenni: my kids def rolled over in crib at that age! I do think you can ask to see a camera though or talk to whoever put him down for nap to clarify. Also maybe he’ll surprise you and when he wakes up in the morning you’ll know!

It sounds like maybe I’m overreacting so I’m glad I posted this before I marched in with guns blazing in the am.

For what it’s worth, my younger son rolled in his crib multiple times before he rolled on solid ground. I think it’s easier because the mattress has some give to it.

@gingerbebe: @LCTBQE: He is getting on the later side for rolling, but again, I’ve never seen him roll all the way from back to his tummy and get his bottom arm free if that makes sense. He struggles with the arm so he will roll side to side but always end up going back the way he came. It’s definitely POSSIBLE he rolled over on his own and took a nap that way but I just very much doubt it since he rolls around in his crib all the time but never all the way over to tummy.

I guess what I’m thinking about in talking to the director is that I want to be clear about my concern but not offend the people who are taking care of my baby every day.

@Jennibenni: I don't think there's really much to strategize here--I'd talk to the director first thing in the morning and express your rightful concern (and I'm sure you won't have a problem communicating how much you're concerned) and ask her to get straight to the bottom of what happened and what can be done about it.

I know it's unlikely, but it is *possible* he turned over himself, especially if you've seen him trying--and especially if they're doing something different at daycare, like not swaddling, or maybe just being in a much more stimulating environment motivated him. My girlfriend's baby just fully turned herself over at 2.5 (!!!) months. And it's all getting hazy but 5.5 months is slightly on the later side for turning over, isn't it? So just throwing it out there that maybe your little boo is the culprit

Does your center have cameras in the rooms? Our infant center did and when there was an incident the director reviewed the footage with us. Parents didn’t have access to it day to day. If it does, I’d speak to the director and say “when I came in my son was sleeping on his tummy and I do not believe he is able to roll on his own, but I’d like to review the camera footage to make sure since i obviously can’t be sure.” If not, I’d speak to the teacher and start by asking if she had seen him roll over from back to tummy at all. If not, I’d mention what you saw and your concern and ask if she had any idea how that might have happened. Then based on that I’d take it from there and keep a close eye on things moving forward.

Well, first of all, both my kids definitely were able to roll over and sleep on their tummies by 5.5 months, so I can't really say that the tummy sleeping thing is unusual.

That said, if you believe he was PLACED on his tummy, I think its something that's probably easily checked on a security camera (I assume most centers have those nowadays). I would probably just tell the director you found your child sleeping on his tummy, he's never done that at home and you've never observed him rolling, so that you're concerned he was placed that way. If he did it himself, then fine, but you want to make sure he was not placed that way. I would ask her to check the camera around an hour or two before you picked him up to see who put him to sleep and to also reiterate to the staff that the kids should not be put to sleep on their bellies.

So DS2 started daycare last week. Overall I’ve been happy with it, but I’m really upset about an incident today. When I picked him up, he was asleep in his crib on his tummy. He is 5.5 months and I’ve yet to see him roll over all the way from his back to tummy. I’ve NEVER gotten him up from a nap or in the morning and found him on his tummy, so the odds he rolled that way himself are pretty low.

The two main teachers were already gone when I picked him up and the late afternoon teacher said he was already sleeping when she came in, so she didn’t put him down.

The director was already gone so I haven’t spoken to her. The daycare’s rule is that babies go to sleep on their backs in an empty crib. It was in the paperwork and it’s plastered on posters in the infant room. I plan to broach this in the morning, but any tips or suggestions on how to handle it specifically? I’m super pissed right now so I want to make sure I think it through rationally.
