Loving her is automatic, because she is a part of me. It never falters or fades. It is instinctive and grows stronger every day. Primal is really the perfect word for it.

I read this beautiful passage once, too, on how it feels to become a mother. I think it applies to becoming a parent overall. (I wish I could remember where I read this and credit the author, so I'll paraphrase here. If anyone knows who wrote this lovely passage, please chime in!)

The writer said that for her, becoming a mother was similar to watching Dorothy come out of her house after it lands in Oz. Dorothy had been living her whole life in black and white and never even knew it until she came out to beautiful, brilliant color. That was what it was like for me when I held my daughter for the first time. I opened my eyes to color.

@Honeybee: THIS!! +10000000000 ;)

My first thought when I read the title was "all consuming". He is what I think about every second of the day, but even apart from "thinking" he consumes my life in every other way.

Loving him vs my husband is sooo different . But I wouldn't think it's weird to say I'm "in love" with both, because I am. But like honeybee said, you make a conscious effort to love your spouse each and every day; but your kid?! It comes naturally and everything else revolves around that. Everything I do now, I do for him.

I wake up every morning for him, I eat well for him, I tell myself while working out I am doing it for him so that I can live a healthy life that allows me to invest into his life...

He is my world. I get emotional thinking about how much love I have for that little guy. It's intense! Nothing compares to the love a parent has for their child.

I agree that primal is a good way to describe it. I don't honestly think I can find the words to describe how much I love that little girl.

Its called agape love! :) Generally used in religious settings, but it means: selfless love of one person for another without sexual implications (especially love that is spiritual in nature)

I always describe it as the difference between rational and biological love. I love my husband passionately but it's a cerebral, thoughtful kind of love. I think about him a lot, where we've been, where we're going, why I love him, what I can do to show him I love him, etc.. The love I have for my kids is much more reactionary. Its intense, primal, and completely involuntary. I make a very conscious decision every day to continie loving my husband and stay present in our relationship; my love for my kids is much less in my control.

I am having trouble describing my love for my kids... at least, using the same vocabulary of love I grew up with.

When you're growing up and dating, it's common to differentiate between being "loving" someone versus being "in love" with them. The cliche is that you can have that warm feeling of love for someone without feeling the burning heat of being in love with them.

I guess I'm wrestling with semantics here, when it comes to loving your kids. Saying that you feel "in love" with someone is generally restricted to romantic relationships. I mean, it would be creepy if a parent said that they were in love with their child. But for many parents, their feelings are definitely more than just "loving" someone...

In short, I love lots of people but the feelings I have for my kids greatly exceeds that. I want to help them, protect them, and just be around them... I just know that we as parents will do anything for our kids.

What is that called... is that just a parent's love? Is there a word for that feeling?
