@PinkElephant: You could also think about an arm chair on either side of the fireplace.

We had a very similar issue with the fireplace and Tv perpendicular to each other.

We did a sofa and a love seat perpendicular to each other on the other two sides of the room. I think your room is big enough you could add in two more arm chairs to round it off.

We had a sectional in a great room like that and it was very limiting. I would really think about doing a sofa, a love seat and two chairs.

We have a big living room like you do and we got a sectional and I kind of regret it sometimes. Even with a gigantic sectional it's hard to fill the room. It would be easier if we could break up the pieces and pull them apart and add end tables and whatever else. Like what @2PeasinaPod: posted.

@PinkElephant: I think I'd put the sideboard either behind the couch facing the TV like you said or in front of the set of double doors closest to the back of the room. It would block those set of doors, but it would be a nice place to have a small bar set up if you put some nice mirrored trays on top or something.

@2PeasinaPod: Thanks! That picture is really helpful! I think I probably need to get rid of the green Chinese cabinet (which I love, but can probably find another place for in the house)

@mrs. goose: Thank you!

@hellobeeboston: I'm 100% with you on comfy. I'm now leaning towards two sofas, and they've got to be chunky & comfortable (so deep seats, with a high enough back), like our current sofa! Chairs, I'm less concerned about, since they won't be the main seating.

@gingerbebe: Thanks! That's definitely what I'm leaning towards at this point. Just trying to figure out if I can somehow do this setup and still keep my green sideboard - maybe behind the sofa that will face the TV.....

The more I think about it, the more I think the room isn't really suited to a sectional - there aren't enough "anchor points" or places that the room needs dividing for it to work. It would kind of just be floating and looking weird.

Gonna tape some things out today/use furniture we already have to try to "represent" other furniture and see how it feels

We did what @looch: suggested and got two couches facing each other - but I have to say we regret it --- i wish we got a sectional, and will probably get getting one in a year or so, even though we've only had our couches for a few years. The comfort of the big comfy couch is important to us even though it's not as visually appealing sometimes, so just think about what you want most! That room looks huge though, so plenty of room!

All that being said, i LOVE what @2PeasinaPod: posted!! And that is two separate couches but they look big enough to still be super comfy.

@PinkElephant: Agreed...it's hard without being there to figure out how something might work, and thought if you had room, making it two separate rooms might work and you could slide the chairs over when you have more company. I agree in not blocking the fireplace. We use ours all the time.

What about something like this, but pretend the fireplace in this picture is your built ins, and the windows on the left have your fireplace in the middle with a chair on either side of the fireplace. This way, you could turn the chairs when you use it?

@PinkElephant: I think you have to chose one or the other as a focal point, if you don't go with a sectional.

I personally would not want a sectional, but I do understand needing the room to be functional.

I'd buy 2 couches and put them perpendicular to each other with a coffee table or storage ottoman. Then you'd have a similar set up to a sectional, but would have a break in the corner so that people can come and go as they please. Or you can put a table in the corner if you prefer.

This would also allow you to move the couch to be facing each other on either side of the fireplace in more formal social situations where you don't want people to watch TV, and the coffee table can go between. If you get an upholstered ottoman as a coffee table, it can also be extra seating in a pinch.

I agree with @2PeasinaPod: about the gorgeous room. I'd do a sectional in there,
Something to offer space and comfort. @@snowjewelz: suggestion sounds like a good option to me.

@2PeasinaPod: thank you! so you think almos separate it into two areas? I'm not sure if I can to it without getting the sofa too close to the tv, but it is totally worth a try!!

If I did do a sectional, i envisioned placing it the way @snowjewelz: described - do that the front lip of the cushions lined up with the start of the fireplace. We use it a lot in winter, so I don't want to block it.

Wow...what a gorgeous room! Please don't paint the built-ins! I know it's dark, but I feel like it makes the room look so regal!

It's hard to tell from the picture, but can you push the sofa closer to the TV and put chairs around the fireplace with a low coffee table like @looch: suggested? I feel like armed wingback chairs would look so nice there, but I also feel like you need something comfy for TV watching.

@PinkElephant: So this is mainly a hang out/conversational room. If you don't hate that wood, I might leave it too, since it goes with the fire place, etc.

Personally I love sectionals, and I feel like you have enough room for one but still has access.

This is what I would do for the moment -

Get a sectional and one side will be against the wall next to the door to garage. So on the "free" side of the sectional, you can push it forward and fit some kind of storage bench type thing since I'm assuming you will use that door almost as an entry way. So hooks behind the door for jackets, then a storage bench/cubby thing behind the couch.

So like the "free" side of the sectional will start the same point the fireplace starts. Do a storage ottoman (big) in the center; bonus if it's on wheels so it possible can be moved around as additional seating.

@looch: Thanks! But do you think it is strange to have something "block" the fireplace like that? I feel like it's a badly designed room - I'd have put the fireplace & tv setup on opposite walls!

I think I HAVE to have something face the TV to appease DH :silly:

@snowjewelz: Built in. It's a little dark for my taste, so I've toyed with painting it white, but worry b/c if we ever had to sell the house, I'd rather have the option of the original wood.

ETA: You mean the big one, right? The green sideboard can be moved, no problem.

We recently moved into a larger home after living in apartment for many many years, and need a whole lot of furniture. I'm trying to figure out what configuration of seating will work best in this family/living room. Anyone wanna play? :)

Currently this is where DH and I hang out at night and where we hang out with company. We'll eventually be doing a bar/club style room in lieu of a formal dining room, and the kids have their own play room with a TV (to which we may or may not eventually add seating other than floor cushions). The room is longer than it is wide (about 17 ft wide by 26 feet long), with a fireplace and two sets of doors along one of the long walls, a door to the garage at the corner of the other long wall, built ins at one end, and open to the kitchen at the other short end.

I like that with the way the sofa is now, you can cut through to the center of the room from either side of the room, and I'm not sure I want to eliminate that option by getting a sectional. But, I also want to maximize seating (and have the majority of it able to view the TV if desired, or at least not have any of it obstruct the view of the TV).

Would love any thoughts or ideas! I thought I was all ready to buy a sectional, but now I'm doubting myself. DH is no help - he says I should just do whatever I like, but then has some very specific requests about "his seat" on the sofa, haha, and I KNOW he'll complain halfheartedly if he doesn't like what I choose so....I feel pressured! :)
